Just yanking them out worked for me, but mind you don't scratch anything.

thanks for the info - seems a lot of work. I didn't realise that a bore was
necessary - I thought the pistons just increased the stroke to give the
desired displacement.
I would try and hunt down a second hand one from a import from a mazda wreckers - I don't think that the MX5 one is the only one that would fit in the housing - but I could be wrong. I'm guessing about $1400 NZ for a new one, possibly $500 to $900 for a second hand one from a wrecker if you can find...
