Many thanks to all who replied, especially Grant and Habanero. Another demonstration of how great the forum is.
Have a good one.

No spare tyre substitutes

I've just bought an NC - no spare, Japanese language squirt bottle and mini-compressor to fix a flat. I had an NB, and after a flat on the Albany m/way at 0500 h in the rain with a full boot of luggage and a dog + passenger (long story, pm me for details) I bought a "Smart Spare Slime " kit from Rep...

Yep, the Kapiti MX5 chapter did the Gentle Annie a year or so ago. more gravel than on the Forgotten Highway (glad you liked that one, Amalmac), but it was well graded off and no problem. It's a great trip with some interesting scenery and again a lot of historical interest. Try googling "inland pat...

It's a great road with lots of features of historical interest as well as being a dream for 5s. The pub at Whangamomona does excellent meals that are real value for money. Don't worry about the gravel section, it's easy and not that long.
Enjoy the trip!

Thanks, Grant, for that useful and interesting reply. I am an AA member of long standing, but when the wife's cell phone had a flat battery the only option was a walk in the rain to the emergency phone. Not a pleasant experience even at a quiet time of day! And does the AA service operate at 0515? H...

Thanks for the info Zorruno, that gives me some hope.
I'm not sure about this, but I think the instructions with the Slime thinngy said NOT to run the engine while running the compressor. Must go and hacve another look in Repco.

"Slime" compressors for flats

After having the lovely experience of a flat tyre on the Albany motorway at 0515 in the rain with a boot full of stuff, a passenger and a dog on board and a spacesaver tyre, I'm looking at those "Slime" packs in Repco, the ones with a compressor you plug into the cigarette lighter and a bottle of go...

Kevin, no, no problems, just 90 min of workshop time.
Doug, no, nothing said about the lower pipe. There's never been any petrol smell, so I hope you're wrong on that one!
Cheers

Finally got the problem fixed. :D KSCRIM was exactly right, local agents had never heard of the problem but did agree that the non-return valve was the cause. Had to get it from Oz, fitted it today. It's a $10 part. Filled up on the way home - oh joy! Took about 1 min instead of the 6 it took last w...

I think KSCRIM may have hit it -- I'll follow up with the local Mazda people. Many thanks.
Thanks skam, but I don't think ther'e a flap in the pipe like the Sentra, and I've tried putting the filler nozzle in all the way, part way and hardly in at all, all with the same result.

Thanks Slydit, but I have the problem at every gas station, not just my regular one. I've tried holding the nozzle just inside the filler tube and the same thing happens. I get kick back at anything more than a trickle. Are there baffles in the tank and can they move/collapse?

Slow petrol filling

In the last few weeks my 1998 NB has become very slow to fill.
At best, all I can do is trickle petrol in, so the operation takes several minutes. No question of being able to use the lock on the filler nozzle - it kicks out immediately. Any suggestions from out there?
