These are lite on American models of the Miata but as far as I am aware they are not lite on Japanese models, they are not a requirement in New Zealand.

I have used Castrol Magnatec 10/40 in my 1990 1600 for some 50000 Kms now with out any isues winter or summer.
As stated in other replies using a good quality filter and changing oil and filter regularly ( 5000-7000Kms ) is the key.

I usually do an oil change and filter 5-7000 Kms using Castrol Magnatech.
Oil and filters are cheaper than engine repairs.

Usually there is a by pass system for the oil to flow if the filter blocks.
This is why changing you oil filter regularly is important.

Welcome Zac,
You won't regret buying an MX5, don't worry about the names you hear from people who are too frightened get in one and drive it the way it was designed to be driven.
I have only had my 5 for 18 months and never miss a chance to drive it (20,000 Kms in 16 months ).

Airflow meter

The early 1600 uses a vane type AFM, this must be mounted flat as the weight of the vane effects the movement of said vane if mount vertical which sends the wrong information too the computer. Not sure what the later 1600 and 1800 use this may be a mass airflow meter which may be mount vertical as i...

I think I read some where that two designs were drawn up one in Japan as a mid engine or a front wheel drive and one in America as a rear wheel drive.
The American design was put in to production so this may explain the hand brake being where it is.
I may be corrected on this.

I suggest that you change your oil regulary, 8 - 10000 ks as the oil does not break down but becomes  contaminated, this is why you change the oil.
Any oil mineral or synthetic does become contaminated.

If you are close to a service I would do it now.
My 1990 MX5 1600 had low oil presure when I got it, did a full service which included a new oil filter (this should be changed at every oil change) and the problem disappeared.

I do'nt see a problem with adding some small extras to add a bit of class to your 5, like a nice steering wheel, some wood interior trim, etc. Plus your usual mudflaps and bits of chrome to the exterior as long as its not over done. This can give you a car that stands out from the crowd with your ow...

Can't help with the noise without hearing it, but I don't think you have a problem with your oil pressure.
I have a 1990 1600 it runs about 5.6 to 5.7 at 3000rpm cold and 3.8 to 4.0 hot at 3000rpm, idle hot its about 2.8, 2.9, have had no problems yet.
