Re: Opinions on different models

MX5s go by different names around the world. In Japan they were called Eunos. In the US, Miata. Everywhere else in the world, MX5. But basically they are all the same. The differences are in special editions Mazda produced - V-Spec (ial)/limited, S-Spec/Limited, J-Spec/Limited.

Re: Buying high milage MX5

The NA and NB MX5 engines (B6ZE/BP5/BP4W/BP-Z3) unfortunately don't respond very well to the regular normally aspirated tuning mods - increased CR, high lift lift cams, porting etc - compared to other makes of engine. It's a fundamental design problem which is pretty much impossible to overcome. I h...

Re: Buying high milage MX5

Obviously with that sort of mileage, things will have worn - engine, gearbox, suspension. However from your description it sounds like nothing is in need of immediate replacement. Fortunately the MX5 engines are very durable, most parts are easy to get and are not expensive. We had an NB6 with over ...

Re: Good Clutch and Flywheel?

Unless you are planning some power improvements, there is no benefit in upgrading the clutch. You will just have a heavier pedal pressure for no performance increase. A lightened flywheel will give you a small improvement in engine response. The 1.8L ACTStreetlite weighs 13lb against the stock 1.8 f...

Re: NB6C Flywheel/Clutch?

The NB6 engine has a different flywheel to the NA6, and consequently a different clutch.
Broomfish Automotive Parts have a stock Exedy clutch for $265 or a heavy duty version for $605.

Re: Nb clutch replacement

Sounds like you have a job on your hands if you've got to replace seals as well. Try Mazda first for these, but they may need to get them in from Japan, particularly the gearbox seals. If that's the case check with Benny at Garage 5 in ChCh. https://www.garage5.net/ Benny stocks a lot of OEM parts t...

Re: Nb clutch replacement

If the car just gets normal road use, a stock OEM clutch is fine. No sense in spending more money on something you don't need. Replacing the clutch with the engine in the car is a bit of a mission. It's difficult to get at some of the bell housing bolts and they are done up pretty tight (48-65 lb.ft...

Re: Timing issue

It looks as if you have done everything correct with the timing. The cams and crank are aligned correctly and the T on the plastic cover is lining up with the TDC notch on the pulley. So the reason it isn't starting must be elsewhere. Have you checked that it has a spark when cranking and that it it...

Re: Towbar + Bike Rack for ND (2015+)

Flyin Miata sell a towbar for the ND rated at around 300kg which would be fine for a bike rack. The tow ball is detachable, so the bar is not obvious when the ball is removed. I'm going to get one for my trailer to take race wheels, tools etc to the track. https://www.flyinmiata.com/ND/lightweight-t...

Re: NB6C engine different to NA6?

The main differences between the NB6C and NA6C engines are in the cylinder head and ignition. The NB engine uses solid lifters with shims, the NA engine uses hydraulic lifters. The NB6 engine has a different coil pack and uses crankshaft and cam sensors for ignition timing (same as NB8C) as opposed ...

Sorry, can't help you with suggestions for places that would buy your Goodrides back, but I may be able to help with a recommendation on a garage for servicing. The MX5 Club of NZ keeps a list of recommended garages for Aucklanders. What part of Auckland do you live in/would you get your car serviced?

Re: NB6C engine different to NA6?

The NA6C engine as fitted to the NB model is very different to the NA6 fitted to the NA cars. There is very little information published about this engine as most of the info comes from the USA, and they never got the 1.6L NB. If you are after service parts, the best place to go to is Broomfish Auto...

Re: NA Rear Outer CV joint

You may have found this out already, but the CV joints aren't replaceable on their own. You will need to get new half shafts. You don't say whether your car is a 1.6 or 1.8, but RockAuto in the US have 1.6 halfshafts for NZ$73 each plus NZ$40 freight plus GST. Unfortunately they only have one in sto...

Re: New Tyres for fast road

Assuming you still have 14" rims on your car, going to 15" gives you a lot greater choice of tyres without compromising the handling (NAs don't like heavy rim/tyre combinations). A 15x7 rim with around 35mm offset improves the handling and look, and can take a 195/55 tyre without affecting your spee...

Re: common issues with engines in 1991 NA?

You could go with either a turbo or a supercharger. You won't get anywhere near that power normally aspirated. MX5 engines don't have a good head design, unlike Toyota or Honda. You will need around 8 to 10 psi boost to get 200 bhp. Turbos are much more common, so there is a lot of info around on wh...

Re: common issues with engines in 1991 NA?

There are really no major issues to be worried about providing the engine has been well maintained - regular oil and coolant changes, radiator not blocked etc. The stock engine can be increased in power up to about 200 bhp before you need to look at improving cooling. A quick mod that a lot of peopl...

Don't believe all you read on the internet about the differences between the auto engine and the manual. Most of this info comes from the US, which had different engine specs from the JDM models that got imported into NZ. In the US the cams were different between the two engines. The JDM engines had...

Re: Where to buy a new NB Battery

You can use any suitably sized lead acid battery from Repco, Supercheap etc. Just measure up your current one.
The one Mazda quoted you on was probably the OEM style gel battery. A very good design, and long life, but not essential.
