tps differences during conversion

Post by bgg846 » Sun Aug 03, 2014 3:59 pm

 i droped 1800 into my x 1600 mx5 today believing everything bar the ignition system would plug up. Working my way arond the engine pluging things up i noticed afew plugs were diferent. Must have just been older style plugs so i chooped them off and conectd the other plugs from my 1800 loom. Then i got to the tps and noticed the old one is a 3 prong plug and the new is 4.
I tryd swaping the whole unit but the seat completely diferently.
so much for plugging up. Can anyone please help?

the 1600 manual doesnt have a normal TPS. its basically just two switches at fully closed and fully open.
the NB 1800 and NA6 autos have a proper variable TPS not sure about manual NA8.

i beleive the easiest setup is to make an adaptor plate to mount the 1600 throttle body and idle valve to the 1800 manifold...check your throttle cable too as i beleive they are different lengths 1600 Vs 1800

How long does flyin miata gear take to ship and is it expensive to ship? Looks like they make a plate. And theyr definitly diferent. Figured a motorcycle shop should be able to shorten it

Pretty sure Mighty Car Mods addressed the TPS issue when they turboed an NA. Ancient memory grey cells are telling me they found a subaru one fits with a tab cut off. But then my grey cells aren't what they used to be...

I ended up modifying my 1.6 thottle body and 1.8 manifold amd got them working with each other. I found flyin miata do a kit to make it am all bolt in affair. Was abit impatiant though. Mcm did that but to a 1600 with a heltech ecu. Iv got a megasquirt just for the ease of plug n play. Il find out this arvo if it starts or not. Fingers crossed

sorry i assumed you were using your 1600 ecu.

if your running a megasquirt then you MUST use the variable 1800 TPS its an easy wire up. one of the four wires on the 1800 tps isnt needed by the megasquirt..

heres a bit of light reading regarding TPS's:

Ok. Il give you a run down on what im doing. Im using a 1600 loom. 1600 pnp ms ecu. But to run my 1800. Got a cop ignition system. Sinco turbo mani. Td04hl.
I have and plan to run a wide band but dont have a down pipe yet. I got it started today but with my old ecu and would die after 10 seconds or so. Woldnt with the ms at all though. It must have thrown a signal and defaulted to dump shitloads of fuel in (not suprised given half the sensors wernt connected to anything) cause it was spitting fuel everywhere. il try the 1800 throtle body and tps then and see if that fires up with the ms

I'd check the coolant sensor signal on the megasquirt tuning software
If that's not getting a signal it will default to -40'C and just absolutely pour the fuel in.

And with out fuel spewin out the exhaust.(cheers team jelly) wouldnt run long tho and at 3000 rpm haha. Now il try swapping the throttle back to the 1800 and wire in that tps.

Yep Tunerstudio works will all versions of Windows
But you need a Window 8 Specific USB to Serial Cable to get it to communicate (Thanks Microsoft)
Jaycar electronics can supply one - But check to make sure it's compatible with Win 8, Most of the cheaper ones aren't
