MAF replacement with a MAP sensor

On my turbo build, I want to replace my ancient MAF sensor with a modern MAP sensor (I understand this is possible when used in conjunction with my DIY PNP Megasquirt ECU) and I am trying to find out what would be a suitable MAP sensor to use.

I gather this is what the gizmo I am after looks like:

A friend suggested that I could use one from a different car (eg a honda civic) and get one from the wreckers to save myself some coin.... is this a good idea? and if so, what model cars would it be best to track down to find a suitable map sensor? Is there anything specific I should be looking for?

In my bumbling research I have noticed mention of three pin and five pin MAP sensors.... which would be most suitable for my needs?

I thought the MS had an on board MAp sensor, so all you need is a a pressure tap on the manifold.

Most megasquirts will have a map sensor built into them

i used a 2 bar GM map sensor and a pick a part holden map sensor plug. sensor i bought from summit racing. a 2 bar sensor will get you to 14psi boost so thats plenty for most cats. no point getting a 3 bar as all you do is lose tuning resolution.

or could you use a link map sensor?
should'nt it just need a 5v output

or does your board have one of these attached to it? i would think it would.

god i hate to think what a link one costs...probably needs some interface board that costs a bizillion dollars too.

I think link parts are moulded from rocking horse poop with unicorn tears used as a resin which is why they are so expensive.

All Megasquirts have an inbuilt MAP sensor. That's good for 21psi
So don't worry about it, if you're going that route :)

Well, I am using a DIY PNP megasquirt setup, so from what you are saying I do not need the physical sensor unit at all?

Nice find Dan! that is indeed the exact model I have :)

now because I am an ignorant tard, could you just clarify that this is a stand alone ECU? eg it will totally replace my current ECU and is not a piggy back one? I have never dealt with things like this before :oops:

I have to admit that I am taking the safe route with this and instead of DIYing it myself, I am taking advantage of Mattapo's expertise and he is kindly putting it together for me....

I have to say, this community has some bloody awesome people here...
I guess our little sports cars have the unique ability of bringing great people together :)

Yes its a dedicated ecu, you unplug the factory one and plug this one in

i would go and start reading up at miata turbo.net and read how to set it up and tune it. but FFS dont ask any newb questions or youll get flamed worse than a burger king patty.
you will also need to pay for the "tuner studio" software for tuning... there is a specific setup sequence and if you dont follow it, you will be chasing your tail when tuning.

and yeah, I hear you about that forum. I have avoided signing up and asking anything because of the number of quick to anger posters there. I do understand that you should search first, but I usually find posts/threads that are similar to what I am working on but do not specifically answer questions relating to what I have in front of me, which is why I love having you guys to bounce my dumb questions off without people raging at me....

When it comes to tuning with tuner studio, I assume I will start off using the basic configuration shown at the bottom of this article:

Thers a good base timing map kicking around on there somwhere which is a good start its the fuelling side where the work is needed like finding injector dead times accel enrichment tuning etc etc.

Personally once it's all installed I'd put a good safe base map in, wire the wastegate open and pay a visit to Teamjelly in Tauranga.

MAF is a mass air flow sensor, it tells your computer how much air is being ...
