Is this gift horse worth looking in the mouth?

Post by 2old4this » Wed Oct 09, 2013 7:13 pm

Hi 2 all. Been lurking 4 a while and have read heaps on this forum but havnt found the answers I need. My wife is sick of the roads on our side of town and wants 2 flick her 89 Eunos 1600. Brilliant! 1 way or another Ill get it! Ill get it! (sorry Debby) It has been played with prieviously and sports King springs, Bilsteins, a full Genie system, Pod, 1800 diff and crossdrilled rotors. Iv got a rx7 AFM 4 it (thanks Mikkels). It runs like a nose but could do with a rocket up its date. Which brings me 2 the point of this. I have been given a turbo off a Nissan Terrano 2.7 diesel. as I havnt ripped it off the truck yet, I dont know what make/model it is? or if it is suitable 4 the 5? We use it mainly 4 trips and want better passing e.t.c. Iv been in2 bikes 4 years an can do my own manifold e.t.c. Any info appreciated Cheers

I suspect it may be worth going for it :) (but others here will know more specifics). As for more information, have you heard of the youtube series "Mighty Car Mods"? they did a reasonably in depth 3 part series on turbo'ing an MX5 and they are entertaining enough to warrant a view.

hope this helps somewhat.

 a friend offered me that exact same turbo off his navara with a td27.
They are a relatively small turbo(smaller than td04 iirc) which would suit a b6ze nicely

That turbo sounds like it could be to big.

Late spool, won't be much fun.

Turbos are fun, a t25 is about perfect, early spool, and full power.

Thanks W.O.T. its a good read I think I'll go 4 it as the price is right. First things first though I will b doing the water flow thermostat shift and radiator up grade 1st so it looks like I will b pulling the motor. I would rather pull a motor that's running good 2 play with it when it suits me, than wait till it shits the bed. Lol. Cheers

sounds like a very good plan. Have you considered replacing your heater and radiator hoses while you have the engine out? just for the peace of mind knowing that they are good and new.

its just a thought.

oh, and another thought I have is that each time I see your username, I imagine Danny Glover driving around in an MX5

Bumping this thread up, i just got this same turbo off a friend. They are a HT12, quick google search shows that they have a 51mm turbine and 57mm compressor.
Comparing that to a T25 with 53.8mm turbine and 56mm compressor it should be perfectly suited for a nice low power, quick spool setup

Thanks Siren, that was what I was after. Iv pulled it off the truck and was surprised how rough the casting is considering that Nissan usually make a pretty good job of things. Or have I just got 1 off a Monday or Friday car ?

Megasquirt ecu doesn't seem too expensive.

You can go with megasquirt as the cheapest option but there aren't many good tuners around. Other option would be to go with a gen 1 link ecu like I'm doing

.. and the value option is the rising rate fuel pressure regulator and timing retard box (eg voodoo box).  Just throwing it out there.  Caveat emptor.
