Possible to replace airflow meter with MAP sensor?

Post by Quicke_Mart » Sat Aug 31, 2013 8:40 pm

Hey everyone, new guy here with my first (of many) questions.
I'm on my 3rd MX5 now, (NA) the first two have been moderately modified when I bought them, but this 3rd one is completely stock standard apart from my upgraded stereo which I just completed.
I was wondering whether it was possible to, or if anyone had ever heard of anyone who has removed the cumbersome and restrictive airflow meter, and replaced it with a smoother, straight intake with a MAP sensor or similar arrangement?
Watching a few "Turbo MX5 - how to" videos around the place, it seems like this is the go when installing a turbo set-up {At least it's an option the videos I've seen have taken}, so what about just straight up getting rid of it altogether, even if not turbo-ing? Possible? Worth it?
Whadya reckon?

As above, you'd have to get some sort of aftermarket ecu to get rid of the afm, it would be extremely difficult to trick the factory ecu into reading a map signal

Yeah I should've been more specific with my question, I meant in conjunction with a new ECU. Replacing the stock airbox seems like a good plan, certainly would help with airflow, the stock design is pretty restrictive as I understand it.
Obviously a good aftermarket ECU would allow me to tune any future mods into it as well, but as a start off mod a replacement ECU and improved intake would be a good way to go I guess.
First things first though, new tyres, upgraded swaybars, stiffer suspension... then play with power. :)

I am looking at a megasquirt, for simplicity and price. The plug and play appeals purely for the ease of use. I'm not looking at creating a fire breathing hell monster at all, just tweaking a few things here and there and maybe one day, when I eventually get bored, slapping a turbo kit in there.

if you are look at a new ECU have you looked at the "Link G4+" ?
when I look at going the turbo route I will be looking at one of these for the OBD II support they have.

except a g4 is 3 or four times the price for nearly zero benefit.
i like the fact that link are a NZ company , but quite frankly they take the absolute piss with regard to pricing and "optional add ons" which are STANDARD on every other ecu.
LINK????? i dont think so.

Just go for something simple like a link g1v5 (ive got one in my daily and one waiting to be fitted to my mx5) or similar, you can pick them up for around $500 and will do more than you need with room for future mods(friend told me that their resolution runs out around the 300kw mark)
