Go with a vented headlight cover, rather than just removing it completely.

As you know, but air intake is positioned in the worse possible place it can be for the moment, but even in that place, running a vented headlight cover over just a normal one, got me another 15kph down the front straight at Hampton's, which just meant that I destroyed my brakes ever faster (sigh).

I have been looking at DIY'ing a vented TSI over the past few days....

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=233621

if you don't feel like DIY'ing them, ross at MX5mart has been working on a nice looking prototype. once I can work out sourcing the appropriate LED doodads I plan on having a crack, and if it all goes to custard then I will just buy a set from ross 8)

Saw a sleek CHROMED Dodge on Southern Motorway yesterday. A shiny car certainly stands out

You hit the nail on the head W.O.T. The amount of air going into your motor will blow your mind. I had a hotted up Block Head Harley with a naked K and N on it. This bike got rained on regularly including pissing West Coast rain bouncing off the road higher than a car bonnet from the Hope Saddle to Hammer turn off. It had a good ignition and never missed a beat We weren't picking daisies either! This bike drank gallons of water and couldn't have cared less it was running 10-1 comp too. Shrouding of the air cleaner will cost you much more in lost performance than water or heat - Put simply even a B6ze is using air so fast that rain on element is not a factor. reoil it though as soon as u can.

great work but I think it needs a "VTEC just kicked in yo!" sticker for real street cred.

Looks great W.O.T. I think you are going to have shrouding issues though i.e. the car will fall flat on its face at high rpm. The first photos of naked headlight well show promise . I take it its a track car ? I would be really interested to hear a comparison of the 2 ways. I don't like being a profit of doom but Iv been caught myself in a similar way. Go and wring it out and see !!! Cheers

Its a track /road car and will try with & without the cover/shrouding to see if there is any noticeable difference.
If there is then i may put a scoop on the headlight cover & cut a hole where my vents are.

cold air scoops

Post by 2old4this » Sun May 26, 2013 11:40 pm

If you're thinking scoops W.O.T. can I suggest checking out the 2 dollar shops cooking utenciles. There are a huge selection of ladles spoons fudge trays e.t.c all stamped out just crying out 2 be trimmed up and used 4 greater things. Food 4 thought anyway ? Let or artistic licence run amok.

Had a fun day at Puke yesterday with absolutely no heating issues like what I had at Hampton Downs but this could be due to four factors..

1....cooler daytime temperature
2....relocated oil-cooler
3....Proper shrouding of intercooler and radiator
4....Cold-air intake via the head light which even with an exposed filter caused no lean conditions or noticeable turbulence.

Whether I gained any power or not,i had no way of measuring it BUT...for only 171whp I did seem to be more than a match to a lot of the field! :D

Car looks good. Have you got a standard 2D wing on there or anything fancy?
