Plugs for supercharged NA

Post by warrior » Wed Mar 13, 2013 4:36 pm

I am going to replace my plugs in my M45 supercharged 1.6, What should I use?

I have been told with the supercharger to go one colder and just have standard NGK,S in there at the moment. When the car was n/a I ran plantium plugs and thought they were great so would like to go platnium or iridium again. I have no problem spending the extra money.

I asked this question on a USA forum and there suggestion was a IRIDIUM NGK 6988.

Does these numbers make sence to anyone or do these plugs come under a diffrent number in NZ?

Also where is the cheapest place to buy from?

You'll spend huge bucks going iridium and to be honest, I don't know if you'll see a difference. They pay about 30 bucks for a set, we pay about 110 (Honda Torneo iridiums at trade at repco/bnt).

As for temperature, definately go 1 colder.

Yeah I know, I did like them when my car was N/A but that may have just been in my head.

Supercheap have 25% off NGK at the moment so may have a look there.

By the way... Platinum and iridium plugs are useless in an mx because it runs wasted spark, so the spark current runs backwards on two plugs, and the plugs are coated on one surface only.

Fires every time the piston is at the top rather than every second time when there's fuel ready to detonate

Basically it means you dont have one coil per plug. One coil fires two plugs at once. Some of the spark energy travels to one plug then through the head and back to the coil through the second. Thats a really basic way of looking at and doesnt fully explain it but you get the idea.

Would you run the same on a turbo set up?

I don't think 7's are cold enough for a decent turbo/supercharger application
Especially if non-intercooled, or doing any serious trackwork.
I'd recommend
NGK R5671A-9

About $7 each

i think if youve got something that requires anything more than a 7 plug , then you SHOULD be running Coil on plug setup first. the factory coils are woefully underpowered. as a very first step the power and earths for the coils needs upgrading and the power feed needs to come from a relay located next to the ignitor and fed by heavy gauge wire from the alternator. the volt drop in that factory loom is excessive.

Sorry mate,
Going to have to disagree with your synopsis on the MX5 coils
I've found the MX5/EVO (Part No. TIP012)Wasted spark coils, to be some of the best on the market
To the point I fit them to all the big power RB and Turbo/Supercharged Lexus V8 Engines and always eliminates any spark blowout problems.
They can easily handle up to 6.0ms of dwell, when the Toyota COP setup are maxed out at 3.0ms maximum, and happiest at 2.5ms, anymore and they over and can explode (guess how I know)
You only have to feel the difference in weight between them to see how much extra copper is in the MX5 coil setup
You are dead right about the power supply to them in the MX5 - it's just a freaking joke, and I reckon is pretty much the cause of 90% of sparkblowout issues.
Saying that I run COP in one of my MX5's and sell the COP kits, but it's more for aesthetics than anything else

I ran 7's and the standard Mazda coil pack in my race car (240bhp @ 10psi) for years. Never had a problem. Got the plugs from Broomfish.
