I want a turbo

Post by evel » Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:42 pm

Well i got my mx5 yesterday, already done 300km's in it, and now want a turbo  Is the best way just to get one from flyin miata or to piece together one here? the only really problem I can see with getting one here is finding a downpipe or finding someone to make you one. all help/ideas/useful shit is choice

fabbing one yourself is the cheapest option. but involves lots of work and research about what fits where etc etc.below is a good basic setup.

custom log steampipe manifold and dump pipe.
used turbo from a GT subaru or misti evo or 200sx.(wrx ones are too small)
megasquirt ECU
440cc blue injectors from a 2002+ WRX
generic small front mount intercooler.
then all the assorted hoses/fittings custom fab brackets etc.

the list looks very simple but have a look at the pics in my turbo build and you soon realise that getting everything to fit properly takes A LOT of measuring and planning...then REmeasuring and more planning.

count on dumping your air con too as this makes fitting evrything much easier.

be wary of Greddy based kits as most of the gear in the Greddy kit is junk and requires replacement anyway, so by the time you buy that and then rebuy everything. your up for some$$$$

buying a flyin miata turbo manifold/turbo/dump pipe is a great solid base that although may cost more, it will last and not break into bits

yeah if i want air con i take the top down so thats no biggie,
Expect approximately 265 hp at the rear wheels at 12 psi

this is just from the big balling turbo kit from flyin miata

thats a bit optimistic for a 1600. but certainly doable if you use ALL the best gear and tune it to within an inch of its life.
having been in a pretty worked up 1800 that was nearly 200KW at the wheels i can safely say that you dont need more than that.
