When doing an engine transplant on the 1.6 NA is it possible to fit the 1.8 without changing gearbox and loom etc or are they totaly different?
Our 1.6 is getting tired and if i replace it obviously the 1.8 would be nicer and i would do it if not to involved I am a mechanic but dont want to end up having to fabricate to much stuff as it will need to be done over a weekend.

swapping 1.6 for 1.8 whats involved?
93 mx5 blue,
Hi...
This is a quite a common conversion. The 1.8 is a stretched version (ie physically longer version) of the 1,6. There is plenty of info on the internet re wat is involved...ie at miata.net (look in the sites garage section )
Some miata specialists in the US actually sell a kit of the necessary parts...refer to flyin miatas web site (from memory)
A chapter in Keith Tanners book Performance Projects...is devoted to this swap. (Book avail here)
You need a complete 1.8 engine incl inlet and exhaust manifolds, fluel rail and engine mounts The gearboxes are interchangeble tho I suggest you get the 1.8 with its flywheel as it is larger/stronger than the 1.6. You can 'wake' the engine up with a lighter flywheel at the same time. You will need to fabricate or buy a bracket to mount your 1.6 coils, and an adaptor for the throttle body.
You can use your existing ecu with some small adaptations.
If you are using a 1.8 from an NB, there are a few additional changes required, but still very 'doable'.....
Cheers, Ian

You can find details of the Flyin Miata conversion kit on their web site - US$189 (all parts avail individually)
In the Tech section of their site, there is a detailed explanation of what is involved with the swap.
