1979 Mk2 Ford Escort 1.3 Estate
Built a 1600 for it with a ridiculously high lift cam in it - but never installed it as someone offered me good money for it. I did run 215 x 13's on the rear which made it handle pretty good.

1980 Mk2 Ghia Escort
I put a hole in number 4 piston so was an excuse to rebuild the engine.
I built it to Formula Ford specs but modified the head further. My best was keeping up with a Tom Wilkinshaw Commodore on the North Western Motorway. Let a woman drive it and she wrapped it around a lamp post!

1983 Mazda 323XGi
Small mods, filter and exhaust

1983 Mazda 323XGi
No - not a double up. My girlfriend at the time had the same model so I sold mine and bought hers. Small mods, filter and exhaust

1987 Toyota Hilux (Current)
No mods except Trident mags. Bought it for towing the race car. 17 years and 305k's later I still have it and it still starts every time. Been toying with replacing the motor with a Lexus V8...

1982 Talbot Sunbeam - Non Lotus (Current)
Current race car, heavily modified. Runs in SS2000

1989 MX5 (Current)
My play car. And yes it is modified...

2008 Commodore Wagon (Current)
Company Car but goes OK for a Holden...

I don’t have many photos of the car unfortunately.
My uncle and I built the car over 2 ½ years. Most of the machining, fabrication, assembly we did ourselves. We spent every night after work (Except Friday night), all day Saturday and Sunday building the car (The fiberglass work took 7 months alone!).
We did start building another Avenger but I found the Sunbeam for sale in Auckland. Unfortunately it wasn’t the Lotus version but the 1600 Ti. We decided to stop the Avenger and work on the Sunbeam.
We did consider running the 2.2 Lotus engine but the class we intended to run in only allowed a maximum of 2 litres. We priced up a new crank to bring the 2.2 down to 2.0 litre but they wanted 5,000 pounds for it ($15,000 NZD). We now run the 1800cc Avenger engine from my Uncles old car (The block is from Brazil where they run the 1800cc and 2000cc Avenger/Dodge equivalent).
The only thing that is standard is the body shell. Everything else has been hand made. The engine sits 300mm back from the standard mounts; we run a modified Avenger/Sierra 5speed box with custom straight cut gears and a genuine factory LSD from England (Which is similar to the Atlas diff they used in the Escorts). We developed a special 7 link rear end which puts the roll centre below the ground!).
The car weighs around 850kgs and puts out around 215hp at the flywheel (180hp at the wheels). Out of the box it did a 1.08 around Pukekohe (Local track) without any development.
I raced the car for about 6 - 7 years then got divorced which killed the income! The car hasn’t been out for about 7 – 8 years now. I still have the car tucked away in the garage but I’m in 2 minds at the moment. I have been thinking of selling it and building an MX5 for racing but not as high tech as the Sunbeam. The Sunbeam is great and is a breeze to work on but it can take up a lot of your time which I don’t have much of these days.
If you are ever in Auckland you are welcome to come and take a look.

if remember rightly some jensens had the 2.0 901 lotus engine which could have been used probably found in the eclat, esprit also although im sure they arent to plentiful here.
i sure will if i ever get up to auckland will drop you a line be keen to have a look around your cars.
