What does the little tag 'Posted by external mail' mean.....well, perhaps I should rephrase. How are people posting if they aren't doing it from within a webbrowser?
It seems obvious enough but for someone that uses these, and other forums, exclusively from within a webbrowser, I wasn't aware that is was possible to post any other way.
Do some on here get a daily email with the new posts and then reply via that? Any reason why you don't just use the web based forum?

I use an email client for the messages. I prefer this to using a browser as
I can't be bothered going through the various forum threads as it takes me a
lot longer to do so. The messages are forwarded as soon as they are posted.
My email checks for new messages every 10 minutes. If I want to go through a
thread I can do so by going in to the forum with the browser.

Hi Timmo
Yes we do get new posts emailed to us, it's an option of the forum and it's
great IMHO. Easy as...
When you log in to the forum, look at the tabs on the upper right, one
should say "My email Lists" get in there, read the instructions and tick the
ones you want.
I'll put my admin hat on here, a timely reminder to all who use remote mail,
as it's easy to forget some simple etiquette.
Please trim posts before replying via email. In other words delete the
original email text before replying. Many people don't do this and Zoruno
and some of the other moderators have to keep editing posts to keep it tidy.
Secondly, please don't use company email addresses that send out "I'm away
from my desk" auto-reply emails when your out of the office as this also
clogs the forum.

seriously though, hopefully this will help
http://www.mx5forum.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=86
you can start using the email feature by clicking the boxes here:
http://www.mx5forum.co.nz/m2f_usercp.php
Some people don't use web based posting at all, I tend to use email or
web depending on convenience.
For those who are interested...
This feature was one of the things I wanted to do when I first set this
forum up, as some people just "don't like web forums" and others "don't
like receiving lots of email" or use webmail anyway so there is no
advantage. Having this feature is the best of both worlds and keeps
everyone happy.
It seems simple, but is actually quite a complex function which is why
it is quite rare for a forum to implement it, and no forum software that
I know of has it built in. Besides that, many forums need web traffic
for ad revenue, and not having people visit your website limits this
somewhat!
FYI, the code I use to do this is from http://mail2forum.com/ and it is
usable for phpBB v2 only at present (which is why we won't be using V3
for a while).
cheers

A forum admin may remind you of one of these one day... don't be offended, they are just helping to keep the forum tidy, organised and a useful resource for future searches.
