2006 Drivers' Training Day in Taupo

Post by DBM58 » Mon May 22, 2006 1:47 pm

Thanks to all involved in the organisation of the Drivers' Training Day in Taupo over the weekend. I cannot think of a better way to waste petrol.

As an interesting footnote, I was talking to one of the flag Marshals who claimed that the Porsche GT cars are reaching 260km/h by the end of the straight (and I am sure that he was talking about the short track). I was lucky if was even up to 120 km/h.

Does anybody have any photo's or short video footage they want to share?
I'm especially interested in the fast "senior" laps at the end of the day.

Blank emails

Post by animalmagic » Tue May 23, 2006 5:32 pm

Anyone else getting blank emails? I've replied to this one and it's
as replied to (ie no content!). I've had about three or four this
morning, though others seem to be coming through OK. Client is
Outlook 2003.

Me too.
The text is there, but something has changed so that Outlook Express won't display it. The last message I received that did work was form Jack with the subject 'Fitting kit for NB hardtop' tmed at 18:58 on 20/05/2006.
The next message I received was from petercristina with the subject 'Re: What you got' timed 20:44 on 20/05/2006.
Mailwasher will display the text, so it appears to be something that was changed on Saturday evening that causes a problem with Microsofts 'fine' products!
I prefer to read my messages using the email system as I find it much faster and more convenient.
Hope this helps narrow down the problem.

Hi all

Had the same problem with blank e-mail pages after Saturday evening. Had originally selected "Plain Text", under "My Email Subs" so switched to the "HTML" option and am now recieving the text.

Try giving it a go.

Cheers

Just changed the setting so will see if that works. Something must have changed on Saturday evening as it was fine before that.

Going way back up the thread - yes I do have some very amateur video of the latter laps, though it makes you realise that those TV camera guys do earn their money. Not sure of the best way to share ? Also have in-car video of my own genteel laps, slalom & gymkana (though I doubt anyone's interested in that).

2006 Drivers' Training Day in Taupo

Post by mx5mike » Tue May 23, 2006 10:04 pm

It was the old circuit.  http://www.raceexperience.co.nz/page3.html

What an awesome day!!!  I felt the Gymkhana run by Larry was superb and was only surpassed by the time on the track itself.

As a training exercise it was fantastic, especially the people I got to talk to doing the instruction and the great all-round organisation by the club.

Chasing down the Targa car was fun seeing as I had a horsepower advantage and no passenger but he had MUCH bigger balls when diving deep into the corners, often locking the fronts in the hairpin but still keeping it fast and together.  I'd love to get to a skill level like that.

I had a top speed down the back straight of just over 160km/hr, engine temp on the Link keypad showed 108 degrees after two back to back sessions.  My (upgraded) brakes are now shot needing new pads and most probably vented discs.  They still worked fine, but not as effective as I would like.  I see Wilwoods in my future :)

The engine, turbo and all the other bits performed flawlessly so the few tools I packed were never needed.  For a first shakedown run, I'm really happy.  The quality and engineering of the Flyin Miata kits is second to none.

I'd still swap it in a second for the MKII Yellow parked up at the slalom.  That was awesome !!

Roll on the next event.  I hope we can get back to Pukekohe sometime.

Cheers
Mike

TAUPO TRACK DAY

Post by Bob K » Tue May 30, 2006 8:10 pm

I also wish to congratulate and thank the MX5 Club for organising and running a first class event. It was a great day followed by dinner and mixing with friendly people at The Lakeland. And hey! the discussions in the hotel carpark next morning and the drive I enjoyed in the white NB turbo were equally worthwhile. The weather was also perfect. Must do it again.
