Best MX5 roads in NZ?

Post by Stevo » Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:32 am

Last weekend a few of us from BoP went away for a road trip.
We left Tauranga and went around the western side of Lake Taupo to Turangi and then on to Taihape.
We then took the Taihape - Napier road (Gentle Annie) through to Napier then back to Tauranga via the Napier - Taupo road on the Sunday, a great trip but what will stay in my mind forever is the Gentle Annie road from Taihape to Napier.
This road seems to have been built especially for thr MX5. It is all sealed and it winds its way for about 150km to Napier.
There are steep hills, rolling curves, sharp corners and even a couple of switchbacks thrown in for good measure.
There is almost no traffic and I would rate it as the best MX5 road in the country.
I would hate to take a guess at how many times I changed gear on that day.
If you have a spare weekend, take your car and have a ball. :D
Cheers Stevo

I went to Hamilton today on my bike. On the way back to Auckland I took a new route. I turned off at Huntly and passed the Power Station on Heatherington Rd. This linked onto Highway 22. It is the first time I have travelled on 22. Its an awesome bit of winding road. Not much traffic on it today. A definite must drive the 5 over road. Could be an alternative to the proposed Winter Wine Deez set for the day after shortest day. Will bring it up closer to the cruise date and see how people feel about it. Its corner after corner. Would be completely different roads to the ones we did the other day so thats a bonus.

Can confirm, Highway 22 and Hetherington Rd are a good bit of fun... lots of twisty sections where you can leave it in 3rd and stay in the power band all the time.

Rotowaro Rd and Waikokowai Rd are good too. All fairly low traffic routes, especially on week nights.

Drive safely and be courteous :D

It looks similar to this one but also slightly different

We did the Matata to Rotoma road (Quickly) again today just as they were closing the road for todays Targa stage. What an awesome road to do when there is no traffic on it. All 2nd and third gear with a few quick forth gear straights thrown in for good measure. :D
