I think it's cheaper for all passenger cars -- previously the ACC levy was $198 per year, now it's $158 for a 1D rated vehicle (e.g. the MX5) whereas it's about $68 for the safest vehicles.
Total cost looks to be $238/year for an MX5

MX5 97 onwards Band 3
Eunos roadster 89 - 98 Band 1
97 and 98 models overlap but MX5 and Eunos are exactly the same car.
Therefore if your 97/98 is registered as a Eunos its band 1, if its rego'd as a MX5, its band 3.

I wouldn't think 1997 Eunos Roadsters would be a thing anyway. They stopped making cars under the Eunos marque in 95-96. I assume they were sold as Mazda Roadster or something.

Imports are often called Eunos
my 98 NB is a Mazda Eunos Roadster on the paperwork and Rego sticker

Clearly a goose.
Is there a limit on how long I can keep a car off the road as long as I keep remembering to put the rego on hold annually?

I'm not sure whether there is a limit, but the latest race car has been on hold for more than 5 years, so you should be good for a while yet.

Looking on nzta there doesnt seem to be a limit to how long you can keep it on hold for.

My motorcycle has been on hold since May 1977, and just the occasional
reminder from LTSA if I forget to renew it on time. Seems to be no big
deal with them. Yet
