...little things that the soft top boot cover clips on to, on the sides?

(Not the domes on the back deck, the 4 raised things, 2 per side).

A bit of a trivia question, that I can't find the answer to, so far.

They are called tenax fasteners.
There is the pull-to-release fastener and the sheet metal screw fastener for
the pull-to-release Tenax fastener.

I believe they're called "Tenex' fasteners, from memory. A search on the
Miata. net will probably give you some more informatyion
