Bloody tappets again!

Post by EricW » Mon Jan 17, 2005 8:13 am

I really should keep my mouth shut sometimes!

Having recently extolled the virtues of Magnatec, (which I am sure is a very
fine oil) to solve my tappet noise problem, Ann started to car this morning to
hear it rattling like a demented Bee.

I am coming to the conclusion that we may have a mechanical problem here, it's
only about 1500 km since we changed the oil and filter.

Anybody had their lifters done and can tell me what is involved? I have a
vision of dollars flashing before my eyes, in a rapidly outwards direction!

Regards

Eric

Have you tried CRC 'LIFTER-KLEEN' 350ml. Just add to the oil and forget. I
had the same problem and I have now put in about 3 tins over a period of about
15 months and two oil changes. I change the oil and filter about 5000km.
I'm not suggesting you change the oil that often as I think 10000km is more
appropriate for modern petrol motors. But I'm a bit fussy and the car does
some short trips. Some people will say don't add anything to the oil but its
just a concentrated version of what's already added to most oils.

Good luck

It may just need an engine flush, the "2 twisty" one on miata.net seems
to be a favourite and after that oil and filter changes every 5000km.

I only get the problem at around the 5000km mark and its a reminder to
change oil and filter and after that I have no problems.

I only use Caltex protech oil and the filter from repco as well ,not
what you would call top of the class quality.

If this won't cut and paste, just go to the Na forum on miata.net and in
the search feature type in 2 twisty flush or just engine flush, there are
also articles on top end cleaning with seafoam etc.

hope it helps

Question for everyone:

Is there anything wrong with tappet noise at and just after startup?

The last time I looked into the, the consensus was that it wasn't really
a problem.

Thomas.

If I may stake a claim for chronological credibility here - I bought my
first MX5 brand new in January 1990. The tappets rattled on start up from
day-one. Mazda service staff said "they all do that sir" (I think they had
previously worked for British Leyland).
Don't worry about it, they all do it. Always have.
