Gazza - Help

Post by Biff » Mon Jan 10, 2005 2:14 pm

Hi mate,

Some time ago you were engaged in the "headrest speakers" debate I think,
well one of mine has blown, and I cant find any of the rectangle ones, what
do you recommend, and can I do it myself?

Cheers

Biff

Gazza - Help

Post by poison » Tue Jan 11, 2005 5:26 pm

Hi Biff

I used a no brander called Boschmann they are 3 1/2" two way full range 55W
rms speakers at www.etechnology.co.nz for $27.90/pair ( full link
=http://etechnology.co.nz/xurl/PageID/10 ... /98222/pmm
_id/0/content.html). Anyway if you join their mailing list they will give you
another 10% or so off. I'm pretty happy with them but you really need to make
some sort of enclosure for them or they sound tinny.

When I finished I posted this, it may help...

For those that recall a month ago I started quite a long debate over my
purchase of some Boschmann 3" (actually 3 1/2") for $24 a pair incl postage.
Well I finally finished fitting them into my head rests. It took longer than
expected as initially I tried just getting away with cutting out a bit of foam
(as many have done) and just pushing them into place. This sounds fine at low
volumes although still perhaps a bit tinny. For a comparison I tried some old
4" Alpines I had and they sounded much the same, my conclusion being if you
like loud music you can't get away with mounting without an enclosure. So I
decided I'd find a simple enclosure, easier said than done. I ended up using
some 80mm PVC downpipe cut into 45mm lengths, I had to use a heat gun to
soften them a little and then push them onto the speaker for a good fit. I
then used the heatgun to flatten out another piece of PVC and cut 4 circles
which I glued onto the ends. I then cut a small hole in the side for the wires
pushed the PVC bits into the head rest, put a little silicon around the edge
of the PVC to seal the speaker and pushed the speakers into place. Zipping up
the front of the headrest hold them in place till they dry. And they sound
good and can go nice and loud too, I'm pretty relieved actually as I would
sure they couldn't sound any good at this price.

So all you audiophiles who don't like the brand name please feel free to go
out and spend a couple of hundred on some speakers (although they'll still
sound better in mini enclosures (IMHO)) but personally I don't think I could
do better than these speakers, and for $48/pair incl post they are a bargain
and a half.

If anyone needs I can send pictures.

Cheers

Gazza

Just had a thought... Why not find a pair of suitably sized speaker boxes
and convert them into sports car seats.

Gazza - Help

Post by poison » Wed Jan 19, 2005 10:19 pm

Hey Biff

Any progress with the speakers?? I can send pix of how I did it if you want,
but if I had more time I would have liked to experiment with a couple of
pieces of flat plastic with the speaker hole cut in each, this way it will
seal to the front of the foam and form an enclosure. If it worked and sounded
any good, it would be a darn sight easier than making tiny little round
enclosures and trying to squish them into place. Yes the more I think about
it, I think it would be a better plan. Not sure if my description is clear
enough, if not I could always fax you a sketch, which you could well improve
on.

Cheers

Gazza - Help

Post by Biff » Thu Jan 20, 2005 5:54 pm

Hi Gazza,

The speakers arrived last week; they are the project for this weekend.

I was going to get to a plumbers supply tomorrow and get some PVC pipe, and
off we go.

I am a wee bit confused as to what goes on the bottom; do I get some plastic
of some sort and glue it on the bottom?

Is the idea to make a bucket with the speaker as the lid?

What do I stuff the bucket with?

<Be nice you lot>

Ta mate,

Biff
