Rear brakes

Post by Petr Valek » Wed Dec 07, 2005 1:28 pm

I am an owner of a Jap import 89 NA, from Queenstown. The rear pads came to
the end of their life so I took it to a machanic for what I thought would be a
routine job. When I came back in couple of hours he said they had to take the
calipers of to change the pads and that the RH one wouldn't come off easily -
something about a ratchet adjustment for the hand brake. And he said it
wouldn't go back together and adjust. (there is an alan key adjustment from
the back that wasn't working). He checked the brakes on the rollers and they
worked ok but not RH handbrake. He said it was fine to take for couple of days
while they looked for a new caliper. I drove the car for 10km and started
loosing pressure in the pedal. Checked the fluid - it was just above min!
Drove it carefully back - apparently the other caliper is leaking.
My questions are - do the calipers really need to be taken of to replace pads?
Are these problems common - something to look out for? Is there an overhaoul
kit available?(Mechanic said they can't find one). And unfortunately now the
most relevant question - where to get another pair of calipers and how much to
expect to pay?

Any advice is appreticated - Petr

Hi Petr

You can get second hand rear brake callipers for your 1989 Mazda MX5 from
Mazspare in Auckland - with a 3 month guarantee.

They currently have plenty in stock. Price: $195.00 + GST per calliper and
$18.00 + GST courier for a pair shipped to your door in Queenstown. Might
sound a little dear but I've used Mazspare before and their parts are good.

Phone: Mazspare on (09)828 9021

Rear brakes

Hi Petr

I just did mine along with new seals etc. New pads is very easy and you don't
have to take the calliper off, unless the allen key screw has seized up. If
this has seized you will have to rebuild the calliper as this allows for the
'pre-adjustment' of the new brake pads to take out any play. If they turn this
allen key too hard then it will strip and you would probably be best to get a
new calliper and put in a new seal kit. To do it yourself is about half a day
(there a couple of fiddly bits that take a while), it's not a hard job but a
little complicated and should only be done by someone who has a bit of home
mechanical experience.

Rear brakes

Hi Petr

We have changed our own rear brake pads with no problems and we didn't remove
the callipers. Followed the instructions on miata.net.

If he didn't have to take the callipers off, then does he have to pay to fix
it? What's the story there?

Good luck
