Punctures

Post by Grant » Mon Nov 21, 2005 6:24 pm

A bit off topic but my Isuzu Bighorn does have an MX5 club sticker on the
rear window!
When my Bridgestone A/T tyres get down to almost replacement time I start
getting punctures from mainly stones penetrating the tyre. Firestone get to
know me well when this happens as I visit them a lot for my free puncture
repairs! Last year I had 13 and so far over the last 3 months or so I am up
to 8. A couple of weeks ago I got them to get me replacements as I was due
to drive through Molesworth Station over last weekend and punctures in there
with the road officially closed are not a good idea! They could only supply
three so back ordered the fourth. Anyway it happened of course, a flat tyre
half way through from Hanmer to Molesworth homestead.
Enough of the boring background. My question is...why do I only get
punctures in the rear tyres? I don't ever remember having a puncture in a
front tyre.
If you do get the chance to travel the Molesworth Road when it is open to
the public then do it. Don't take your MX5 though. The road is just too poor
for a low ground clearance vehicle. Normal cars would be ok. It's also
extremely dusty.

Hey Grant.
Could it be something to do with rear wheel drive?

Would love to see photos of the Molesworth Road, it was closed last time
I/we went south - is that the toll road?

Punctures

Most of the punctures have occurred while in 4WD, but not all. A stone
slightly larger than I could close my fist around was found inside one of
the tyres. Too damaged to repair but it was close enough to the end of its
useful life anyway.
It is the toll road. A small group of members of the local amateur radio
club went through to test for communications in case of search and rescue,
fire or other emergency in the station. We were given permission to (and
keys) to do this and also take a number of GPS positions for SAR for later
use. A very interesting weekend.
I will post some pictures on the net as soon as I get the time and let you
know the URL.
Got my fourth tyre today so should be puncture free for another nine months
or so!
