Removing electric aerial (was Re: Sticky aerial)

Post by zorruno » Wed Nov 16, 2005 9:12 am

Ian Beardslee said on 11/16/2005 08:36 AM:
I had problems with my aerial - it wouldn't move at all. I ended up
pulling it all the way out ('fun'). After a couple of squirts with
CRC in the right places and a bit of brute force it is now fine.
Ian, how does it remove - is it 'fun-easy' or 'fun-whoops, I shouldn't
have done that' ?

Mine has a kink in one of the sections which stops it from retracting
the last bit. Hopefully I can push the kink out.

Or can I buy a new aerial bit and replace it?

cheers

zorruno, The metal used in the aerials is so thin, and the fits are so neat,
that it is nearly impossible to straighten the kinks. Replacement masts are
available (for an arm AND a leg) from Mazda. Aftermarket power antennas are
longer and the mountings are different, but they can be fitted. I had to do
this in a MS6. I think that Mazda uses the same power antenna in all their
cars, so it may be possible to get a replacement from a wrecker??

I've got an MX5 towbar which I never got around to fitting (due to
modified exhaust location), if you're in Akl and want to have a look
...

It's black, not BRG ... ;-)

You need the genuine MX5 antenna assuming we are talking about an NA. There
is not enough room for a different antenna. The MX5 one is a non standard
short length to allow it to fit in the available space. The NB one is
mounted further to the rear of the car and is longer.
Check out www.mx5parts.co.uk They have the mast for an NA available at 15.39
UK Pounds and the NB for 14.34 UK pounds.
Freight shouldn't be too expensive.

You probably need to be seriously disturbed to come up with this solution,
but it seems to have worked!

We have a George Forman grill which has a special cleaning sponge. This
sponge is ribbed to fit the aerial, (actually, it is supposed to fit the
grill plate, but what the heck), it has an abrasive side and a sponge side.
Thinking laterally, I gave the extended aerial a quick rub up with the
abrasive side, a polish up with the sponge and, finding my CRC empty, a
quick rub with some Vaseline between my fingers, it now works perfectly!

I suppose a debate on whether I am a genius, or an idiot, would make a nice
change from the Red/Green debate!
