Sticky aerial

Post by EricW » Wed Nov 16, 2005 7:29 am

I have noticed that the retracting aerial on the car has not been coming down
fully on occassions, sometimes fine, other times not.

It seems to be the very top section and the very bottom section which don't
fold up correctly.

Having never played with one of these, has anyone got any suggestions before I
rip into it?

Eric

Sticky aerial

Hi Eric, I have found giving it a realy good clean with CRC or WD-40 or
similar, then retracting it fully(even if you have to push it the last bit)
several times can fix it. It picks up a lot of dust etc when up which is the
carried down into the mechanisim when it is retracted.

Cheers.

I had problems with my aerial - it wouldn't move at all. I ended up
pulling it all the way out ('fun'). After a couple of squirts with
CRC in the right places and a bit of brute force it is now fine.

First try some CRC on the aerial. My bet would be to take it out and
give it a serious bit of CRC in the holes. Although it does seal
fairly well and have a drain hole at the bottom it can still collect a
bit of water through it, running some CRC through it can help clear
that out, as well as losen any sticky bits.

Give the mast a good clean and polish as there can be a build up of goo from
insects etc over time. Use of some sort of thin cleaning lubricant such as
WD40 or equivalent helps a lot as well.
Run it up and down a few times when cleaning it, giving it a helping hand if
necessary.
When washing the car, always give the antenna mast a good clean as well.

My advice Eric. Take it out and dismantle it. The drain hole at bottom
is probably blocked and the drain pipe could be disconnected too. When
I got my Jellybean the antenna was stuck at half mast and the business
end was rusted and corroded solid up to half way. That was 4 years
ago. I cleaned it up, painted it inside with "Hammerite", cleared out
and reconnected the drain. No more problems. Easy job.(a bit difficult
to remove when unretracted tho'! Had to bend it and straighten again
when finished.)

Not worth going overseas for this one... I got my Genuine Mazda
replacement retractable arial from the Ford/Mazda dealers at cnr
Ponsonby & Gt North Rds for just under $30. Yeah, I was surprised, too!

Hi Guys
We drove home in the dark the other day and realised we had no lights on the
temperature control panel or the hazard flashers/pop-up headlights bit. All
the area above the radio is in darkness. Is this normal or should it be
lit?

Sounds daft but its the first time we needed the heater and I couldn't see
it clearly!

Look forward to your answers (makes a change from the Red/BRG stuff too
thankfully...)
Is your car red? That could explain it ;-)

Are these electric or manual? Is there an aftermarket (not original Mazda)
one that fits? My aerial unscrews and is a pain in the ass to remove/put on
