Roll bars

Post by EricW » Wed Nov 09, 2005 7:51 am

Is it easy to roll an MX5, or for that matter any other car? Hell yes!

In my several years as a Traffic Cop I saw many many cars upside down, and
not all of those drivers were lunatics (although some of them certainly
were).

All that is needed for the car to roll is that the effect of the centre of
gravity falls outside the line of the wheels, this can happen in many ways
some of which, like a sudden loss of traction whilst cornering, "tripping"
on a kerb or obstruction, etc, have been covered by Gazza.

However, the major cause of rollover fatalities in this country is an
initial departure from the road. This can be caused by, for instance, being
blinded by oncoming lights, excess speed, wandering stock/kids or a myriad
of other reasons, but the fact is that in this country we have an awful lot
of "off road excursion" accidents.

In a large percentage of these, the vehicle rolls down a bank or into a
ditch or drain. In any event, it finishes up upside down.

A bolted on "style bar" is of little help, because the vehicle does not
simply roll over, it is also moving, and the longitudinal forces will simply
bend the bars or their mountings.

A welded bar is usually (and for certification has to be) braced to deal
with those forces.

So, if you want to look cool, by all means fit a compliant "style bar", but,
if you want to be safer in a roll over, a full welded roll bar is the only
way to go

My roll bar is a half cage that consists of the rear bar and backstays. Does
not comply for
track or Targa use. The body stiffening and handling improvement has been well
worth the installation.

There is the issue that anything fitted should not interfere with the raising
and lowering of the soft-top.

Ralph,

my roll bar (main hoop, back starys and cross brace) is msnz approved for
club racing on the track. it was made and fitted in WN, clears the soft top
even with the padding. Cost about $700 drive in drive out, with powder
coating, car log book and msnz paper work all approved.

IIRC it's something about the wasted spark ignition setup running one
spark plug in each pair *backwards*, ie it's sparking not from the
small and pricey platinum/iridium centre electrode to the outside, but
the other way around.

So when only the centre electrode is platinum it's losing the benefit
of lower sparking voltage and being erosion resistant since the spark
is originating from the normal (non platinum) "ground" electrode.
Ergo, a dual platinum (or iridum) plug would be ideal in our case.

The wasted spark setup is also why MX5's tend to chew through ignition
wires - they fire twice as often as say a distributor setup. Well,
that and revving the snot out of them! :D

Something like that anyway...

If you want to get really excessive there is also Engine Dialysis Flush not
sure which parts of NZ you can get this done in but its a crazy system where
they do a complete engine clean while the engine is running, does both oil
and fuel and was mostly done to reduce emissions on diesels but is also a
good idea for anyone looking to keep their engine nice and carbon free.
I only know about it cos my dad bought a franchise for Southland and seems
to have had some really nice results on all kinds of engines. hehehe
Not that Im advertising or anything but figured it fit with the thread at
least somewhat.

Only bolted on with one bolt at the bottom per side? If so, that

fix the bar to the car; you can actually lift the car by the bar...

WiM,

3 bolts on the back stays, only easy to see one, the others are behind the
plastic inner gaurd when looking from the wheel, and when looking from in
the boot they are on the other side of the stay.

they are all high tensile, of the correct size etc to pass msnz regs, also
bolted to the correct place with large plates on the underside.

4 bolts per side on the main loop, plus 3 on the stays so 14 bolts in total.

WiM,

3 bolts on the back stays, only easy to see one,
the others are behind the
plastic inner gaurd when looking from the wheel,
and when looking from in
the boot they are on the other side of the stay.

they are all high tensile, of the correct size etc
to pass msnz regs, also
bolted to the correct place with large plates on
the underside.

4 bolts per side on the main loop, plus 3 on the
stays so 14 bolts in total.

Only bolted on with one bolt at the bottom per
si
de? If so, that
isn't a lot... My HD Deuce has 9 bolts on each
side so 18 bolts to
fix the bar to the car; you can actually lift the
car by the bar...

There is the issue that anything

roll bars

Post by my m5emails » Tue Nov 15, 2005 8:22 am

WiM,

custom made. Most roll cage builders can make a roll bar to msnz specs.
However for some time msnz had issues with bars in mx5s due to ppl bending
the lower legs of the main roll hoop, which is not allowed in the regs.

There are 5 of us who have cages or roll bars, who race at Manfeild, two of
us had the bars built by the same guy, however the others have different
mounting points etc.

Mark has the same roll bar as me and also has a fr section that bolts in and
to the rear bar to make it a full cage. He can take it out of the car for
normal use.

Cool, good to know that I anm moving to a country where people are
actually take interest in cars, build things for them, modify
them,... Here in Holland it is even difficult to find heat resistent
spray paint for exhausts, and if you lower your car you might get in
trouble with Technical Control aso, Holland -like Belgium- is a car
unfriendly environment. What you do see is rediculously big alloys on
crap cars (yep the tosser cars), car hifi's more expensive than the
car itself, big Turbo stickers (obviously without one under the
bonnet) and darkened windows... Kit Cars are not even completely
legal here. Oh boy, am packing up my luggage and shipping happens
shortly. Better prepare to welcome this crazy Belgian muhahahahahaha!

I can send you some photos of my front hop as well if you like. Its
removable leaving just the rear stayed bar for summer use. The soft top and
hard top are fully usable with the it all. The guy who made Mike and my roll
bars has made a very good job. Its gone through 2 warrant checks and many
scrutineerings without any question.

Mark

Mar and Mike,

must say a full roll cage is the real deal and might be a good idea
in my case (seen my sideways and 360degrees history...).
Now a cage that is partly removable so it's a roll bar sounds even
better as a cage is maybe a bit exagerated on the open road for the
run to the supermarket.
If it's not a big hassle I would love to see some pics, or a link to
pics of the bar?
Cheers guys,

WiM

PS I just started working 1hr ago over here in Holland. 7 degrees and
rainy today... Wednesday 16th November 10.12AM

I can get a pic this weekend. The exhaust is modified to be a
straight shot out the back after going over the axle area - kinda
loud! My spare tyre is relocated to the garage, hehe.

The towbar has tabs welded to the tie-down hooks, joined by a
horizontal bar to which the tow bar riser (?) attaches. I thought it'd
be perfect for hauling building supplies around with but have since
bought a turbodiesel wagon for non-fun related motoring ;-)
