Mx5, masculinity and hairdressers...........................

This may be an old topic, but since I haven't been around (on here) that
long just thought I would run 2 strange incidents I had today regarding
my MX5...

!) I was parked in Ponsonby with the top down (as one does), when a guy
walking past stopped to admire my car, ending his comments with "is it
your girlfriends car?" AND to top it off the %*&$@^ guy was SERIOUS!!!

2) Parked at AUT today when a women (age: mid thirties) walked past
today and said that she loved my car and really wanted one but her
husband said that he wouldn't drive it as it was too much of a
"hairdressers car". At this point I pointed out that AUT does not teach
hairdressing and I was doing a BHSc-Paramedic, she looked embarrassed,
smiled, and walked off..

So, good people, what's up with that???!!!???

I do realise that perhaps if one wanted to purchase a car to reaffirm
ones masculinity it would probably not be the mx5 (I might get shot for
saying that!!)

Anyway. your thoughts people! Before I start driving our Rav4.. LOL..

When we told a friend in Auckland we were coming up that Sunday to
participate in the gathering he said "Oh no! Nobody will be able to get a
haircut that day!!" LOL
I too find it blow dries the hair very quickly (though not always in the
direction you wanted).
I know of one man who was parked in his MX5 (don't know what colour) when a
little girl went up to him and said "I love your car... It looks just like
Barbie's!"
Does anyone else find young children always smile and wave as you drive by
but teenage boys yell obsenities? I assume they are obsenities, I can't make
out the words but the tone and gestures indicate obsenity. LOL
As long as you are having fun it it, ignore the rude people who do not know
any better

Ah Ken, welcome to the realm of contradicting jibes associated with this great
car. There is definitely a hairdresser here in (sunny) Blenheim driving a nice
black NA complete with her salon signwriting on the doors. A with-it young
woman & her hair is never in a mess. In Christchurch a few months ago I saw an
overly-made-up mature woman (hopefully) driving a BRG NA with, if my memory
serves correct for I laughed so loud, sign-writing on the boot & nose
advertising 'Escort Sandy' and an accompanying phone number. Make up you own
mind on that one if you will. Certainly very bold if true to label!!
My point is, it takes all sorts. I, and my wife, love both our Fives and to
blazes what anyone else thinks.

Don't worry mate. The MX5 is an "everyman's car" meaning it is a class ride
for both girls and guys. Owning this car, with it's sophisticated mix of
style, brilliant handling and performance potential - all available for such
low dollars - sends this signal to the masses: "Hey I've made an intelligent
decision".

What's the problem? The girl didn't say it looked like a car Barbie

have an MX5!

I think it's to do with the hair... 90% of hair dressers seem to have f***ed
up hair styles, and as MX5'rs with the top down it's literally a bad hair day
after going round the block a few times... so maybe that's where the confusion
lies...

And next time some dickhead says "Is that your girlfriends car?" maybe you
could reply... "no! I just borrowed it from your boyfriend, and he gives
good..." OK I'll stop there before I get booted off the list... ha ha

Make sure you check the thread pitch as well... i
remember that i had a real time trying to find the
correct one in my box of very useful nuts bolts and
misc bits, (junk draw in other words!!)
That bolt size sounds about right, just measure the
thickness of the bracket where the bolt hole is then
subtract from bolt shank length to get exact length of
new one needed.

The last time some know it all mate called my car a
hairdressers car i took him for a spin down a very
curvy road at very fast pace... once he had recovered
from having the *&** scared out of him he admitted
that maybe he was misinformed!!!

P.S my car is having a hairdryer fitted, does that count???

At some stage we put a basket with hair products and a hairdryer on
one of our Irish friends passenger seat... we thought it was funny,
the friend didn't think it wasn't such a great idea but we had a good laugh.
But (with capital B) in Dublin we had to show what our hairdresser's
car was worth. At the red lights a Porsche Boxster stops next to
ours, and starts revving. He was out there for a good auld race... so
we provided him one. He had no idea our standard looking MX-5 was
equiped with a turbo spinning at 12PSI putting out some 242bhp. Bye
bye Porker with red face, and probably angry GF, us driving off
burning rubber with the biggest grin possible. Those you are happy
you can humiliate others in your 'hairdresser's car'

We often joke about it in our house as my husbands has a nice new V8 Ford,
(I have a lot to say about that). Unfortunately he doesn't mind, in fact he
enjoys driving my MX5, and guess whose car we run around in more now with
petrol prices! Caryl i get a lot of teenagers commenting on it, things like
cool car Miss' (I enjoy the Miss best), by boys and girls.
The biggest ribbing I get is when we wave to each other.

I won a brand new RAV4 and sold it within a week to buy a MX5
(Honest!!).

Anyway - on being teased about driving a MX5.

I pulled up to the lights one day with my dog standing on my lap with
its paws up on the steering wheel (it's a miniature Chihuahua). I guy
pulled up at the lights in a Transit van - looked down on me started
laughing like a mad man and said "Excuse me mate, don't mean to be rude
- but you look F**ken ridiculous". In fairness - I guess he had a
point.

Most people are ignorant when it comes to cars - they think that big
chrome wheels and blue neon windscreen washers make a performance car.
To improve handling you add 100kg of subwoofer and amps then cut (or
better yet remove) the springs so that you can "lower the center of
gravity".

Obviously the best way to improve traction (especially on a front wheel
drive car) is to add a HUGE wing on the boot so that you can get more
down force at the back.

Because these people are getting 110% of performance out of their $400
car (with $6000 of modifications financed thru Mag and Turbo) they need
the driving aids to help them - Monster Tach's (nothing less than 5" in
diameter please) are essential. Apparently they work best in
Automatics.

So that they can get the best grip possible they do not replace their
tires - that way they get slicks just like Formula 1 drivers.

I really don't care what people like this think. Personally they just
make me laugh.


And if that doesn't work - ill just set my dog on them.

I liked what you wrote. Talking about "modified" $400 cars, try this:

Spotted a $100 slightly rusty early '80s Corolla last week with what must have
been no springs at all, $3000 wheels and tyres, a home made rear wing of
enormous proportions that would be right at home on a jumbo jet, large fuzzy
dice swaying on the rear view mirror (an essential performance mod for those
not aware - remember the bigger they are the quicker you go!), elaborate "go
faster stripes" and finally, no not a "drain pipe" tail pipe but rather one
borrowed from an underbridge culvert. Placed smack in the middle.

Ah well, we were all young once.

As a young whipper snapper I drove a 1962 VW Beetle fitted with a large
muffler and thought that this effectively made it a Porsche - that was until I
went round a corner too fast one day trying to impress the girls strolling
down the pavement. I suddenly discovered that my trusty steed was not so
trusty - it's swing axle saw to that. It was a little miracle I didn't crash
- but the resulting series of lurches & swerves while fighting to regain
control must have looked like something out of "Herbie". I had to stop to
regain my composure, shocked to the core and cold sweat pouring off my brow.
The girls I had tried to impressed laughed themselves red and pointed their
fingers as they walked past. It was not a good look & I was embarrassed to
the bone. But I learnt a hard lesson that day - and I'm sure I'm still
breathing because of it!

Same experience here, 2 of my friends drive Porsches in Belgium: a
beautiful Porsche 911 Speedster 1989 Turbolook and a 'standard'
Porsche 911 Convertible. They both were surprised by the nimbleness
(?) of the 5 around a curvy road, and certainly after I installed the
Greddy. Everybody is misinformed, the 5 definately is NOT a
Haidressers car, it's a proper sportscar that is rather cheap
(compared to others) to run and insure. I just loooove it!
