Number Plates in NZ

Can you have a sticky number plate on the front or do you HAVE to use
the metal one you get with the registration?
I am asking 'cause in Ireland they cannot use a sticker as the number
plate, in Belgium we can... Cheers

The "legal" position is that you have to use the metal plate. The reason
being that, since plates are made in "twos" it would be possible for two
different cars to have the same metal rear and a stick-on front, defeating
the whole purpose of displaying the plate in the first place.

A few cars here have used stick-on plates, but you are likely to get pinged
by the Police.

By the way, I like your mate's car

And it should be in the middle of the front bumper or can it be off
centre... according to the rules?

It has to be "as close to the centreline as practical, in an upright
position" of course "practical" is a matter of opinion.

Hi WiM

Lots of people mount them off the side of the "mouth." I haven't heard of
anyone having problems with the law due to an off-centre plate.

Stick-on-plates - I think the general procedure is that you get a $200 fine.
Sometimes you are given the option of taking the car to a police station
with the correct plate mounted, within 'x' number of days, and you may get
the fine excused.

If you are wanting to take the risk of using a stick-on-plate, my advice is
to use proper reflective sticker and have it as close to the size and design
of the proper plate as possible. I have heard of someone who got stopped
for speeding in their MX5-with-stick-on-plate and the officer said "I like
how you've done your plate."

Mmmmh, I have the reflective numberplate too on my Belgian car.
Maybe you can do the Irish trick: you have the holes in the front
bumper, and you have the appropriate front number plate... in the
boot. When the cops pull you over you tell them the plate just
dropped off the day before or so and that you were about to put it
back on. That is what the guys in Ireland do, and it works every time
apparently (no police on this list is there?) Hehe, not my idea
anyway but I like it.
Okay I see, got a lot to read and catch up on NZ laws... I even have
to take my driving test in NZ within a year of arrival

"...and don't live in or drive through a major city" seems to be an
addition to this (or live down the road from a police station, which
didn't help either in my case)

I now have the original plate back on there after having no plates for a
year or so, a half sized plate replica for quite a while and a stick on
for fair while too.

On the upside, and after a long battle, I have a standard form letter if
anyone wants a copy that says basically 'thanks for the fine again, I've
fixed the issue, can I be let off?' (I have one for unpaid regos too...)
