Overheating saga continues

Post by RD5T3R » Mon Oct 17, 2005 3:06 pm

Thanks for all the feedback regarding our overheating problem. We knew the
thermostat was new and what with the flushing, new water pump, cambelt, etc,
everything thus pointed at the finned beast at the front. As a result we have
ragged out the rad and shipped it into a rad repairists to see what gives.
Will let you know the outcome.

Meanwhile we will move the No. plate anyway and look at getting a rad top
cover - the bit that confuses me tho is they show a large and a small one on
mx5mart. What's the difference?

Ah well the wing mirrors have arrived (Thanks Ross) but we have nothing to
bolt them onto as now the car is in the garage having rad surgery!!!

Such is life

Just out of curiosity, where SHOULD the number plate sit? anyone got any
pictures or can give me a good explanation of it?
Wierdly my car tends to the other end of the spectrum heat wise, stays cold
for AGES which is great for the engine but sucks for me on a cold morning haha

Think you may have a suspect thermostat (stuck open?) Dwight.

Regarding the large and small one, I think that the difference is that the
large one sits on the very top, the smaller one fits between the frame and
radiator - a bit fiddly to install but (in my opinion) a nicer finish. You
also run the risk of shearing the top off the attachment bolts if they are
seized in place.

On the other hand, bigger is always better.

Well Dwight, better cold than overheated. Sounds like the thermostat, a
piece of cake to fix for you or the garage. The number plate should be
over the front inlet, not down in it where it blocks the radiator.

The rad's probably of aluminum and with time and salty climate it
corrodes and have to be replaced, that's what I had to do.

After discussing overheating and other problems, could anyone advice on
what to do about rust on the underside and door sills? My MX5 1,8 '95
has been sitting at the oceanside and the climat is a killer. Is there
a spray, paint or what to remove the existing rust and then what to
apply. Grateful for some suggestions.

Mike
