Lack of Power in MX5 with BD6 engine

Post by Mark O'Sullivan » Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:53 am

Hi Everyone. I'd appreciate your help & advice. Have test driven several nice
early 90's MX5's, wanting to purchase one of these fantastic little sports
cars having wanting one for a long time. But there's a problem I'm not sure
about. Every MX5 I've tested had a reasonably quick launch & handled like a
dream, but were all somewhat flat performers in third & fourth gear. My
current car is a Mazda Familia Astina 1990 with the same BD6 1600 DOHC engine
with the usual cosmetic differences (it's definitely not a BP 1.8 DOHC) but is
considerably faster through all the gear ranges, especially in third and
fourth & even top where it pulls like a train. I read that the BD6 in the MX5
produces 86Kw (116 Hp) while the stock BD6 in my Astina was quoted by the
second-hand dealer as producing 96Kw (130 Hp) with a claim that it was an
ex-factory high compression version. But I haven't been able to find any hard
info to verify this claim. Does anyone know about a high compression ratio
variant of the BD6 DOHC engine & whether there's an early 90's MX5 model
variant that has it? Want a clean classic stock 1600 MX5 sports car with it's
handling bonus & rear drive but want the power of my Astina too. (As far as I
know the Astina weighs the same as an MX5 at a little over 1,000 Kg). Any help
and advice related to the considerable performance variation between these
stock BD6 1600 DOHC engines is very welcome. Cheers. Mark.

AFAIK all the 1600 (B6?) engines were 9.5:1 compression. Other than
that your front wheel drive may have a bit less drivetrain loss
compared to rear wheel drive - but that's only <5 hp at the top end.

It's not too hard to tweak things to gain some hp/torque - advance the
timing, remove the clogged catalytic converter, uncork the intake and
exhaust etc.

It's possible that your Astina engine has had these done already! Or
it has some other hot bits surreptitiously installed in the engine, or
cam overlap or other factory tolerances are aligned in your favour
hence the difference.

Hey, you could always swap them over ;-)

Hi Mark,

Appears your dealer was correct:
http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/ ... ?car=28039
The astina has 10:1 compression against 9.5:1 for the manual mx5. The below
link gives some history on the B series engines:
http://members.aol.com/solomiata/MX5Engine.html

Personally my car before the mx5 was a 100kw corolla gti, and I did find the
mx5 a bit lacking in power by comparison. However the ignition timing advance
mod made a big difference to how powerful the car feels (Though probably not
much to how powerful it is). It adds quite a bit of oomph to the bottom end
of the rev range, certainly more noticeable than the pod filter or the sports
exhaust system. And it's free if you can borrow a timing light...

Just one note when removing the air con bracket from
the side of the engine...
There is a bolt that goes into the front of the block
through the A/C bracket and oil pump case, it clamps
the oil pump to the block.
when you remove the bracket you need to buy a
shorter bolt and install it back so that it clamps
the oil pump, or it will leak oil, and youll have
erratic oil pressure.
(ask me how I know this :) )

Lack of Power in MX5 with BD6 engine

Hi Simon & Jeff

Many thanks for your info Simon. I wonder why Mazda did that? Read Jeff's
input so had the Astina checked out - apart from the obvious sports exhaust -
for possible mods. There's nothing different about the engine from stock
that's evident, except the K%N air filter fitted in the stock housing & I've
always used 98 octane fuel. Checking 0-100km times on several runs all
recorded low 7's and as told to me, confirms the engine must have cams
installed with higher lift and greater overlap (as Jeff picked up on) and most
probably modifications to the inlet air flow meter. (Must have been done in
Japan - I'm the first NZ owner).

The chap that tested it remarked on the sound made when pushed in fourth and
fifth. Sounds like a Subaru he said. "A thumping bellow - unusual for an
in-line engine". And on the in-gear performance "like a rat up a drain pipe".
(He liked both).

Anyway thanks guys, mystery solved with your help and am sure an MX5 can be
made to go the same. Or exchange the engine for the one in the Astina as Jeff
suggested as an option (thanks for that idea). Olsen Developments has been
recommended for mods if I go that way. Is there anyone else that's recommend
as well in Auckland?

Thanks & Cheers
Mark
