Am chasing my tail on this problem with my '91. Happens when the
transmission is unloaded such as when you change to lower gear and
back off in most gears but 5th. Disappears when you load it up
again

The noise is a harmonic in the driveline between the
diff and gearbox... Its not the clutch or heatshields!
I had a rattle which matched this description (in my '89). I also
have heard of it happening with lightened flywheels. In my case
though, it was the clutch - for some reason the damping springs were
loose & rattling (it started out minor & got worse over a period of
about a year).

I have no explanation of why it got that way, other than maybe dodgy
clutch manufacture (it was a non-original clutch, done by a previous
owner). My flywheel seems to be of standard weight. Problem went
away when I got the clutch replaced (bearing failure, because the
previous fools had failed to replace it while they were in there).
