something technical

We ran out of zoom going down Vincent St the other day - thought I'd broken
the accelerator cable, puuled over and pooped the hood - cable was fine, but
the accelerator pedal was on its side : broke the bracket the pedal bolts
on.

Apart from the hassle of waiting an hour for a tow truck to get Stripey
round to City Garage, catching a bus home to get the spare car, etc etc Glyn
was able to weld the bracket together (after removing brake and accelerator
pedal ) but pointed out there's a cm or two space under the bracket, so a
heavy foot over the years can cause a break. I've put a spacer in place,
but if you all get bored go outside and stick your head down in the
footwell - if you see any cracks I'd get it fixed before it fails you on the
motorway!

Peter

or at the front of a queue of 200 MX5's... guess there'd be no shortage of advice (and possibly a number of various hand gestures :OD )

at least it wasn't on the way to Christchurch!
September was expensive : alternator repair, bracket repair, clutch
replacement, buy ferry tickets...

Had a clutch pedal break on a Fiat Strada once - the pedal actually sheared
off. The Fiat dealer said they'd never seen that happen before and took two
weeks to get me a new one from Turin. The only other time I have heard of it
happening was on a friend's Mercedes 190 a few months ago, which suggests
that Clarkson's comments about Mercedes' build quality may have been
justified.

And don't be rude about the Strada - I was young and innocent, it is the
only car I have ever seen with a wine bottle holder, the exhaust sounded
like a Ferrari and, of course, it was bright red. My tastes have become more
sophisticated since then...

In fact, don't laugh about old Fiats at all!

I bought a Fiat 125 brand new in 1971, drove it for 137,000 MILES in 15
years and replaced, 1 headlight, 3 timing belts, 1 water pump, 4 sets of
brake pads, 2 sets of tyres, 2 rear mufflers and the clutch (at 130,000
miles).

I then sold it for more than I paid for it.

They just don't build them,(particularly Fiats) like that any more

Regards

Eric

Well ,...I can you tell some other stories about these so " good Fiats "
. I was working in those days for a big Fiat dealership in Amsterdam
124 -124 coupe -125 -125 s -128 -1100 R etc ... they where already
rusting on transport from Italy , valve seats burning out and many more
nasty things ... but they are certainly a breed apart . ( had a
couple Fiats myself )

I still prefer my little Diesel nowadays and of course my MX 5 '99

Had the exact same thing happen to me about two weeks after I bought my baby.
Took off from an intersection, and noticed a severe lack of power,
changed gear, and the pedal fell off. Ended up driving the last
kilometer home (luckily it waited until I was almost there) with my arm
under the dash pulling on the pedal for throttle...
