Prospective purchase queries.

Post by Lisa & Paul Cardosi » Sat Oct 01, 2005 7:21 am

I am looking at buying a 1990 MX5 and would like to know what the oil
pressure should show on an 80000km car at hot idle on the dash gauge?

Also are Dunlop SP Sport D89 tyres the best choice (original equipment
and specifically designed) for this car? Are they still available? If
so, then any idea on prices?

Thankyou in advance, Paul.

Can't help with the answers to your questions, but I'm sure someone else
will.
Arrange to have the car for test over next weekend, register for the Mazda
NC launch, and there will be plenty of MX5 owners to give you good advice on
the car!

Hi Paul...
Tyre technology has come a long way since 1989, so that is a bonus for MX5
drivers. A good mid price up grade available in 185/60 x 14 would be a newish
tyre from Yokohama - called a C Drive. (about $140 ea on the car)
From memory, I think the rule of thumb for oil pressure is approx 14lbs psi
per 1000 rpm, usually checked at 3000rpm, if that is of any help. My 125,000k
example was reading low with an eratic needle on the guage till I gave it an
oil and filter change, then hey presto!!!. A good number of people experienced
with MX5s will also recommend you do oil and filter every 5000k, not
10000k...
Cheers, Ian
