The most likely reason for dash lights not working is removing the plug
going into one of the 3 blank plates on the right of the steering wheel.
Various models have fog switches, demister switches etc there, or just
blanks.

One of the blank plates is for a dash dimmer. It just happens that this
blank plate also has a shorting jumper on it - if you don't have a dash
dimmer installed. If you unplug the plug from it (even though it looks
like just a blank plate) the dash lights no longer work.

If you want to use this blank for something else (e.g. alarm LED,
another switch etc) you need to short the pins on the unplugged plug
some other way.
