Well it went like this. First run I was a bit nervous and
up aginst a civic SI. Made a great start and slightly ahead
until I selected 5th instead of 3rd. Did 17.46 and the
Civic 16.9. Ok Next run concentrate on the 2nd 3rd gear
change. Huge difficulty selecting third at max RPM - would
not go in. Stirred up the box a bit and run 17.9. The car
in the other lane was an old Galant 1989. It did 12.55!!
may have been a little modified I think. Third run I
figured slower may be faster so was conservative about
revving out 6500 instead of 7300 - 17.75. Ok another run
this time against a Nissan sss saloon. Big problen
selecting third - huge graunch then in 17.24 and beat the
Nissan (17.9). I gave up at this stage as the gearbox was
not going to play ball. In all other respects the gearbox
behaves. So what is the problem with the gearbox? All
behaved fine on the drive home. I do have some figures to
work with as they give you the 60 foot time and the eighth
mile time as well so I will go ahead and put the flywheel
in. Also had a ball apart from the above. I really
recommend having a go but be prepared to be at the back of
the pack. There are some fast cars out there.
I wonder if the oil in the gearbox is an issue. I used
Redline MTL fresh about 1000k ago. Maybe I should have used
the heavier 90 grade?
OK so what now? Should I get the gearbox stripped and
checked when I have it out?

Don - it's a common "problem" under those conditions. Apparently the
motor torques the transmission enough for 3rd not to be in it's usual
place, although still the same relative to 2nd , just not where
your brain expects to find it !
So chances are your gearbox is OK
Just for laughs - http://www.wwtfd.org/bigdmiata/fastest.php - the
toptime there is with a RX7 driveline and huge turbo, but otherwise
still a street car :-0

Don, before you take it out you should try an oil change.
If its running normal gear oil, change it to transmission fluid for
automatics and take it for a drive.
Changing to the thinner fluid not only makes the car faster with less drag
in the gearbox but makes for faster shifts and may cure your 3rd gear
problem.

Don..
I have just changed my g/box oil to Castrol Syntrax (expensive but still a
little cheaper than Redline).
Is your car a 1600 and standard?

There is a 16.?? sec standing 1/4 in your car somewhere!! The occasional
road test notes the 2/3 change difficulty when 'pressing on'...
Do you know the respective weights of your two flywheels? I understand a
standard 1800 is 19lbs..

Hi Ian
The machine shop reckoned they removed 2 pounds. I did not
verify that. My new Flywheel is 9 pounds so that should be
really interesting.

Hi Mike
Same experience the one time I got third with only a minor
delay.
The next session at Meremere is the 28th of August. I may
go and have a few more goes but need to calm down and sort
the 2/3 gear change. Maybe it really is just practice.

Hi Doug
Launch was about 5k and drop the clutch (gently). Lots of
wheelspin. Huge fun. I will look at the clutch when in
there but given it is only 15k old I'm hoping it is OK.
Haws the new motor going?

Thanks for your tip. Do you need to get at the spring from
beneath the car? I figured you would get in from the top?
Let me know how that works for you. I'm going back to
