door stereo speakers size and replacement

Post by Ken McNoe » Mon Jul 25, 2005 8:48 pm

Hello people

Has anyone replaced the front speakers in a NA?

I understand I may have to redrill the holes as the original speakers
are oval?? I went to parallel importers today and they gave me a heap
of "advice" that I won't get speakers to fit.

door stereo speakers size and replacement

In my 1992 NA I fitted standard size 165mm (6.25 inches) speakers. I don't
remember having to alter anything to make them fit but it is possible I had
to drill extra mounting holes to line up with the speaker mountings. Some 2
or 3 way speakers have the mid range and tweeters protruding too far out the
front to allow fitting behind the door grills. Check them first.
The original speakers were missing when I bought the car but the holes were
the right size and shape for the round 165mm replacements.

Hi
My 1990 has had its speakers replaced before I got it. It has round Pioneer
speakers and has small clips to attach them to the original mounting holes.
However, if there is a problem using the clips, some new mounting holes can
easily be drilled

Hi Ken, Unless there was a change somewhere along the line, the speakers in
an NA are ROUND. Certainly, mine are, and I don't recall seeing an NA with
oval speakers.

I replaced mine with Sony Xplodes, I think they were 6 inch diameter

You can get them at good prices from the Sony factory shop in Auburn St (I
think, or it might be Nugent St) off Khyber Pass Road, and they just bolt
straight in on the original screws. They are pretty much a standard speaker.

You just need to be sure that what you buy is not too deep for the door, but
any thing that does not look too exotic will be fine

I believe the speakers in the NB are oval, which might be where the confusion
arises

The speakers in my 1998 NB (with factory Bose unit) were 200mm round. I
expect the non Bose would be round as well. The only oval speakers I have
seen were the horrible head rest factory speakers that should be thrown away
and replaced immediately anyway. Pity the NB doesn't have headrest speakers.

SupercheapAuto has 160mm (?) round speakers for only $19.99, which
sound much better than the rotted out OEM ones ! :)

I have been throwing a few toys onto the MX5 (90) of late - with the
latest edition being a Flyin Miata strut brace - I thought that I would
give a quick review in case others were looking at a similar install.

Purchase price $200 NZD (thanks to trademe.co.nz and trader Bridge27
(David) - who I would recommend - he also has a wind blocker and cup
holder to replace the ashtray for sale)

In regard to bracing I already have Brainstorms front and rear
sub-frames installed.

Initially I was quite skeptical about the need for a shock tower brace
on a car with double-wishbone suspension - but thought that I would give
it a try anyway.

So I installed it in about 15 minutes (you need to move the diags) and
took it for a drive. It was immediately obvious when I left the drive.
I guess I really didn't notice the nose twist before - but I certainly
noticed a difference moving onto the road.

Heading out to the twisties over Albany hill - it was really something -
a lot better than I expected (although as mentioned, I had low
expectations). Some of the tighter corners used to cause significant
chassis shake - this has totally disappeared. The car turns in a lot
tighter, and feels even better to drive for it. The 65mph shimmy has
gone - also a good thing.

I really thought that this would simply be a bit of engine dress up -
but now I would not take it off. Combined with the sub bracing you can
tighten up the earlier MX's a huge degree. I know that the FM unit is
$200 USD, but it would probably be a better option than some of the
cheaper units around.

Oh - and it looks cool.

I recently replaced the speakers in my 1990 with some fusion 3-ways,
they bolted straight into the holes from the oem speakers. The down
side was i was forced to cut out the grill from the cover, leaving the
speakers open to be kicked, but this has not been a problem so far
though. I can probably take a picture if anyone's interested, they
sound awesome, even with the factory head unit.
