another strange question from Ken, parking tickets and conve

Post by Ken McNoe » Fri Jul 15, 2005 12:15 am

Hi all

Taking advantage of the one fine day recently, I decided to spend today
with the top down (as one should), it was great, UNTIL I got to AUT,
paid the parking Nazis and went to put my ticket into the car, then it
struck me, where on earth does one put the parking ticket in a
convertible??? Being a (reasonably) intelligent guy (well I think so
anyway, even if I didn't know what a flywheel was!) I was kinda
perplexed.

So the question begs, where does one stick the parking tickets so that
they A) don't blow away and B) so that no one can reach over a pick it
off my dash.

I did think about getting another rego holder but what do other members
do?? This is something I will face every day at Uni, and they tow cars
quicker than a red car goes (which is a lot quicker than a white one!!!)

LOL nice one Garry.
The point I was trying to make is that I don't want to have to put up
the roof every time I leave the car.. =)
And yeah, I am okay with the roof, I have a diagram to help me =) Hahaha

Hi Ken,

Where do you park your car ??? ive been looking for a ... nah just kidding
but also just trying to point out that there are a number of advantages of
putting up the roof, unlike the flywheel you will probably be familiar with
the roof and how it works :) .

( no offence intended just trying to add a little humour with some sound
advice )

Putting the roof up may have another advantage in that you may have
issues with the insurance company should you have the car stolen having
left roof down in a public car park for extended periods.

I believe that it comes to what they call 'properly securing' of the
car. Some Insurance companies are OK with an alarm and immobilizer,
some are not. It may pay to check.

And the obvious issue is that you live in Auckland and the way weather
changes here - you will probably park it on a beautiful morning and
return from class to find it full of water from the last downpour.

Not really as silly a question as it sounds, my wife parks our car in her
firms large car park and, yes, it is a pain in the butt to have to put the lid
up, whilst trying to hold your lunch, a briefcase and a handbag, (can't really
talk about the handbag from personal experience though).

We got one of the cockpit covers that Paul (he of the MAXi5AC fame) makes, and
that works a treat for short term covering of the interior on a nice day, I
would not rely solely on that if it was raining, but then again I would not
have the top down. (I'm an enthusiast, not a masochist).

There is a picture of the cover on page 21 of the June / July Top Down, it's
$80

Regards

Eric

Ken,

I never put the top up. In pay and display carparks I usually stick the ticket part way into the reg holder so it doesn't blow away. I also sometimes note the invoice number, so if someone takes it I've got some proof that I bought one.

I've got a microwave sensor on my alarm, so if anyone reaches into the car the alarm goes off.

I did come back to my car once to find the parking Nazis starting to tow it away. They hadn't even looked to see if I had bought a ticket!!! I had and it was still there so they had to take their gear off again.

Cheers
Chic

I also don't put the top up if I don't have to (weather wise). I met a guy
once who had a convertible Porsche and he parked with the top down, I asked
him why and he said he'd had two soft tops vandalised, and one drink poured
onto his seat (God bless the safe and wonderful life we have in NZ, free
from crime) and he said he keeps a plastic bag in the boot (also good it
rained briefly) and a seat clean costs about $4000 less than a new roof...

There was an interesting article in the latest Consumer magazine saying they
can't fine you for parking in private property, like a uni. They can clamp
you and charge a reasonable removal fee. And they can tow you.

I also have no idea where to put the parking ticket. There was a guy in
Wellington a few years ago that made the news as he had stuck it in the rego
pocket, then he got a ticket for an obscured rego sticker and it was upheld
in court, so be wary.

Cheers

Dunno... I leave ours open if its in the street, and pop the
ticket on the dash half under something,, ( like an empty smoke packet)
if I am not going to be long. In a parking building etc.. I
put the top up.

If you leave it open somewhere llike that,,, Rich suggests you put
the parking ticket inside the stereo... therefore reducing

the time that the light fingered brigade have to spend at your car,,,
they can get two for the price of one!!!

There is also some legal discussion around ownership of items forceably
attached to your car. I don't know of any specific instances where
someone has tested this, but I part manage a body corporate where we
live and the question is thus:

'if you attach a clamp to my car, and I believe I'm entitled to park
where I am parked (or even if I don't), can I forceably remove it so I
can drive my car away?'. Worse still, 'can I find out who clamped my
car and invoice them for the cost of removal?'

People who clamp cars in privately owned areas have to be very sure of
what they are doing - e.g. appropriate signage, proof that they have
looked for the owner of the car first etc. Towing is better, as the
company usually doesn't release who dobbed you in, and also they have
set 'reasonable towing fees'.

Doesn't stop anyonw from nicking it, but you can use a bit of duct tape
to attach it to the dashboard or window.

Which brings me to point two: always have duct tape.

Incidentally, I've mentioned this before, but I spray glue my rego
sticker to the window (contact adhesive in a can). Stops it blowing
away, and peels half the writing off if you try and remove it. Clean up
the window with white spirits when you glue on the next years one.

Those rego holders are ugly, bulky and the glue is usually pretty poor.

Hi zorruno

How's work :-)

I have also wondered about this. If someone attaches something to my car
without asking a) doesn't it become mine, so now it's mine I can take it off
myself by whatever means I like?? and b) Even if they come and take it off
don't they have to buy it back off me??

zorruno do some work,

When I get my Rego sticker, I also ask for a double sided sticker for my
trailer. This is a clear piece of double sided tape the same size as a rego
sticker, so I stick my rego sticker to my windscreen using this. Looks much
more tidy than a saggy old holder.
