Front numberplate mount

Hi Mike
I also have my number plate hanging by 2 bits of metal.
I checked with LTSA re stick on ones and they say they are illegal and any
Police officer short on his quota may pick you up for $200

Hi, I was under the impression that stick on numbers are legal but that they
are believed to be illegal by enforcement officers because they have been
told this as you were.

There could have been law changes but I think it is still worth checking the
specific law and if it does say you can then you only need keep a copy in
the car to avoid a $200 ticket and help educate our traffic enforcement
people at the same time ( as a motorist I find this a very rewarding task ).

I have been stopped many times for wheels that stuck out from the guards by
as much as 6 inches and always got away with it cause the law said the guard
"Should" cover the wheel which is very different to the guard "Must" cover
the wheel so remember to read carefully before you decide its illegal.

Ps the wheel / guard law has now been updated so you cant get away with it
anymore as I used to.

Hi Garry,

Sorry mate, The Traffic Regulations are quite specific. They require the
"plate issued to the vehicle" to be mounted "vertically and upright" in
other words not on it's side or upside down, or lying down on the bonnet.
So, while I agree that our plates are ugly and the slavish conformity
required is ridiculous, the poor old traffic cop does not really have a lot
of choice in the matter, except in the discretion he might personally choose
to apply, and stick on plates do not conform.

Being a Paramedic I know a number of cops and after a quick couple of
phone calls this morning, have found out the same thing Eric. =( The law
is very specific!

It makes sense really. The whole point of having registration is to make
specific cars identifiable. If you could have one plate (original) on the
back and a "stick on" at the front, then you could, in fact, have two
vehicles with identical plates, using the second original plate on another
vehicle, which rather defeats the whole object of the thing.

But wouldn't it be good if LTSA or whoever got creative, and allowed you to
have an alternate plate, when a standard one was not suitable, which you
could obtain from them on trading one original plate in.

Oh well, we can but dream!
