Help!

Does anyone know how to fit the striker plates to the inside of the car for
the hardtop clamps. Not the ones at the top of the windscreen.
Are they the same as the ones on the windscreen?

they're attached with star-headed bolts. I'll be reattaching mine
tonight... with a screwdriver :-P

What problem are you having?

The plastic trim on the inside probably covers the place where the striker
plate goes. I want to be sure I've got the right bits before I start
dismantling the interior of the car. It looks like a long and complicated
job and might involve a hacksaw. You know: the toe bone is connected to the
foot bone is connected to the ankle ...
It looks like there is a whole series of bits to be removed before I get to
the right place.

Andrew

If a hardtop hasn't been fitted to your car before, you will need to
cut out some of the black plastic trim panel just behind the door (I
think the panel is tan on BRG's and other 'coloured' interiors). From
memory, when you remove that panel you will see a molded area on the
back side that shows where to remove. Then you need some bolts - the
originals are dome headed torx (star) but any of correct thread would
suffice.

If you are in Wellington and want to swap panels for ours with the bit
factory removed (we sold our hard top) let me know and we can arrange a
meeting. Or if you want to get a pattern of area to remove.

As Ian said, there are markings on the inside of the trim that indicate
what to cut out. Take off the trim, cut the marked rectangle out, fit
the plates to the pre-threaded holes. 20 minute job max.

If you want to swap with someone who has the plates (or the already
cut-out trim), but doesn't want them any more like Ian also mentioned,
this is always a better option as it helps out two people :)

No, they are not the same. Mazda stock them though if you don't have
them already. They also stock the correct bolts. I know Jaycar has the
correct head bit for the stock bolts, other places probably do too.

You can use a hardtop for a while without the side striker plates - I
did for over a year with no problems (ok, the hardtop was not actually
on for 1 year...!). The rubber seals squeaked a bit as they moved
around sometimes though... and I'm sure the side clamps make it safer.

Or 40 mins if you car's BRG as you'll have to stop to throw up once in a
while working so close :-)

There's a bit here on adding the hardtop.
I've done it - it's not hard, but be careful
cutting the oval hole, the material WILL
split if you cut too fast.

Nothing wrong at all. Don't worry about Gazza, he's in denial. He really loves BRG, but could only get her plainer looking sister :0D
