Exhaust drone

Post by ap.ander » Thu Jan 27, 2005 8:15 am

I recently bought a BGR 1991 auto. The previous owner had
done the spare tire / exhaust modification.
The muffler used is probably not the one speced in the tech
sheet. He apparently tried 2 muffleres. The first gave a
tinny sound sound he changed to a deeper toned muffler.
The problem I have is that there is quite a drone at 100
K/hr. I have had a discuss at the muffler place and they
have 2 suggestions at this stage.
1. replace rear muffler with the tech sheet one. (assuming it is quiet)
or 2. insert a reasonator muffler near the front of the
system..
(prehaps not like some) I would prefer a quieter car.

Any thoughts on the solution. Is the Dynomax Super Turbo
17762 a quiet muffler.??
Thanks
Alister

... or you could try buying some sound deadening sheet from a car audio
supplier and sticking on the boot floor and as far as you can reach up
behind the petrol tank

My 1992 BRG auto has a Genie exhaust manifold, no CAT and the rear mufler is
one from an early model (late 1980's) Honda Accord, according to the muffler
man here. This was fitted to the car before I bought it. The car is noisier
than standard, but not too bad and when cruising at 100km/h or thereabout,
it is not noisy at all. It has quite a deep note at low speed and doesn't
sound too bad at all when accelerating hard! As this muffler is quite a lot
smaller than the original Mazda one, all I had to have done when mounting
the spare under the boot floor was get the exhaust pipe relocated slightly.
Seem to have the best of both worlds with a nice (to me) exhaust note when
working, but quiet at cruise.
