Shock absorber boots

Post by sfhardman » Mon Aug 15, 2005 11:05 am

Hi all,

I'm in the process of replacing the shocks on my NA 1.6, and the boots/dust covers are pretty much shot (bump stops are ok, but the shock cover parts have perished away). I've had a quote from the local mazda dealer for $86+GST each. Ouch. Does anyone know of a cheaper source? For that matter anyone know if the dust cover part is really neccessary?

Thanks,

Simon
The tyre relocation exercise requires a very small muffler..., there just
isn't space for anything else... unless you have at least one resonator
in the line, you're going to end up with a very loud "blatty" exhaust
note with only the small muffler!

Big thanks to Karl letting me look at his tyre relocation. I am keen

Does anyone have a relocation without this???

Hi

I am in the same situation - failed its wof on a leaky
rear shock. unfortunatly/fortunatly they are ohlins
units and a silly expensive but there is a guy in
taranaki that can rebuild them for about 200 each (in
case anyone is in a similar situation...)

anyway - my shock boots are perished too - they have
the integral bump stop that you need to have really.

I bought 4 genuine madza ones from mx5parts.co.uk -
they are about 11 uk pounds each so about $29? I didnt
ask them about shipping from the uk (I am getting them
sent to a family member who is forwarding them on)
but I guess you could email them and ask for a quote -
it is just over 1kg so I guess $30 for postage if they
will do it but who knows... has to be worth a try...

they have lost of other mx5 goodies - I got a genuine
replacement electric aerial mast too for about $55 I
think.

it is a sad state of affairs when you have to get your
parts from the other side of the world!

hint: undo the front upper ball joint on the
suspension and give the arm a good whack with a hammer
and hold another hammer on the other side - mine came
appart really easily and it makes getting the front
units in/out much easier and doesnt damage the rubber
boot like a fork ball joint splitter does...

hope this helps

I bought some from Pedders to go with the Konis - they were $20 ea IIRC.

I think unless you're usinig Mazda shocks and boots there's going to
be a small gap - some say thisi doesn't matter (and I don't lose sleep
over it ;)

Shock absorber boots

Post by Euen » Mon Aug 15, 2005 12:28 pm

Hi Simon

Having just bought a set I agree on the price issue. See if you can find someone who can get them for you trade.

This discussion came up at the Technical Day at City Garage and the boots are supposedly a warrantable item although the guy reckoned that LTSA have eased off on the enforcement a bit due to the difficulty in getting boots for some cars.

Have a talk to the garage where you get your warrant to see if they will pass them.

Cheers

The "boots" incorporate the bump stops - which are a vital (and warrantable)
part of the suspension - so you can't go without them! Have a look at
http://www.virkki.com/jyri/miata/bumps.html and you will find out more than
you want to know about the subject.

I've got 2 unused ones in the garage - can't remember if they're "old" or
"new" models - which you can have if you want them.

Shock absorber boots

Post by simple » Mon Aug 15, 2005 1:51 pm

As Bert mentioned, steering boots are a workable option - that's what
we used on my car for a Koni install at the end of 2001, and they
seem to be doing the job still.

My gibberings on the matter are still in the club archive:

http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nz ... 1/msg01401.
sht

http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nz ... 1/msg01433.
sht

(Note that each of those addresses needs to be on a single line when
you paste it into your web browser - if you fail to get these
addresses to work for some absurd reason, you can also find the
messages in the archive by using google with this search:
"site:mx5club.org.nz mowatt boot shock")

(Note to zorruno: [hidden at the bottom of the message so he probably
doesn't see it] Is there a shorter alias we can use for the archives
such that links don't break over lines? Or, as a quick & dirty fix,
an option on the broken list-search page that lets you poke in a msg
id to bring up the msg? Yes, we still love you even though you
haven't had time to fix the search page :-)

Shock absorber boots

Post by sfhardman » Mon Aug 15, 2005 4:00 pm

Thanks all for the advice, waiting to hear back from Ross at MX5mart (just in case some unfortunate has splashed out on the Mazda boots and then totalled their car...), but if no joy there I'll go with generic boots, cable ties and the stock bump stops. FWIW I had the boots with no dust covers on the rear of my car when I went for a warrant last week, and no-one complained...
