Merry Xmas to all,
A warning to travellers in Nelson and Motueka about using stickon front
number plates. A Ferrari was pinged $200 in Motueka recently for having an
undersized front plate, and our car was pinged in Richmond last night for
not displaying a front registration plate (ie the standard front plate)
though we have a reasonable sized reflective plate. Thankfully if we roll up
to the local police station within a fortnight with the genuine plate
attached, we'll be let off the standard $200 fine.
Has anyone had any success getting an exemption from the LTSA for reflective
non-standard plates on the front of a car? Or know any other way round
having the ugly bulky aluminium job?
Cheers
John

Would it be possible to see the offence notice?
Which act (law or regulation) is being contravened?
What is undersized and who says?
I have a suspicion that this is one of those "laws" that people are pinged
for incorrectly.
The belief about what is required being somewhat different from the fact.
I have yet to find a policeman that knows what specifically the law requires.
On a personal note... I think a nonsense law should be treated as such.
Don't let them affect your Christmas.
Smiles and a great New Year.

no - but I'm trying to find out - nobody seems to want to show me theHas anyone had any success getting an exemption from the LTSA for reflective

specific parts of the law...
I got off my $200 fine btw - I sent a letter asking for a law clarification
with relevant sections and also showed them a photo of my plates stuck back
on.
They wrote back saying I didn't have to pay - but didn't give the legal
answers.

The offence notice states "for not displaying a front registration plate" -
not for having an undersized plate, but I suppose for not actually having a
standard reg plate, which is quite correct in that my stickon job is not a
genuine "registration plate". I'll be putting on the standard job back on in
the meantime, and asking for an exemption from the LTSA or the Minister, who
according to what I've read on the LTSA website and legislation is the
person who decides what is OK.
