Brake Pads - any thoughts?

Post by zorruno » Wed Dec 06, 2000 11:23 am

need to do brake pads shortly - I'll probably just buy from Mazda, but any
thoughts or knowledge of aftermarked brands available here for MX-5? (94
1.8)

cheers

Brake Pads - any thoughts?

Post by Fletcher Blades » Wed Dec 06, 2000 11:57 am

I bought Bendix pads for my 1.6 at AutoStop (previously Auckland Brake
& Clutch).

About $120 for all four corners...

They work well on the street, stop well, low/no noise and dust.

But they did start to fade at the Taupo track... Coming into the
hairpin on the 4th or 5th attempt was a little hairy.

Fletch.

Brake Pads - any thoughts?

Howard,

Fletch has some experience with Hawks, and Colin Partington has too,
although I'm not sure what he currently has.

The EBC?? Green pads are getting good comments overseas now too.

Brake Pads - any thoughts?

Post by Colin » Wed Dec 06, 2000 1:02 pm

Hello, Stealing a quick minute from work...
Some thoughts based on my own experience.

Genuine Mazda pads are very good, they have excellent cold grip and work
well with the handbrake.
The heat of race laps shows them up somewhat but if you don't do any the
these are the pads for you.

After market replacement pads.
Unless these are a high performance item, then leave well alone.
The midas/pitstop cheapies are just that. While they may seem ok at first, a
quickish couple of bends or two /three quick stops explain the cheap price.
I think of them as equal to a secondhand import tyre. They ought to be
illegal.

There are several brands of road/race pads available. Most of them are part
of a range that goes from std replacement to endurance racing.
I am presently using Hawks from Blackmotorsport. I like them on the road as
they warm very quickly but will not fade under race conditions or when
setting a new record for the west slope of the Rimutukas. They are not very
grippy when straight out of the garage with the hand brake, although as I
said warm very quickly.

Note: hand brakes on mx5's operate via cable to the rear discs. This
means that the contact pressure is very much lower than when hydraulically
applied via the pedal. This along with a low pad /rotor area equals the only
just ok handbrake that our cars have.
Note: Fluid replacement. I believe this should be every two years for a
road car to maintain optimum performance. This is whether the car does many
or few kms. Mazda genuine fluid is very good and conforms to the best specs
for this type of product. I don't believe there is any advantage in changing
to a name brand, unless... you are like myself and want to try for my
westside record. I am currently using Motul dot 5.1 which has a higher
boiling point than standard fluids. I have used the Motul very high temp
300degrees C plus for racing , although for road use it needs replacing
often due to being more hydroscopic.

This has turned into an epistle...sorry about that.
Last thought. The genuine Mazda pads are probably the best bet for a road
car.

Ditto.

I have Bendix on the front, and they're just their regular pads. OK except
at Taupo they felt soft and uninspiring. Passengering with Colin I
discovered the difference between my 57s lap and his 53-54s lap was mostly
much later and harder braking and bigger balls! It made me think I should
put some attention on my brakes, although I think the other will remain the
present size. Of course brakes would not have helped me last week!

I bought some brake-pads from Mazda a while ago.

But they were "Genuine Blue Badge Parts" from Mazda New Zealand.

There was nothing wrong with them, they were good (better than the
Bendix I have now?), but they were not the same as, and didnt come
with the extra springs/clips/shims that come with Mazda Japan parts.

epistles welcomed - thank-you all for answers. :) I'll go with mazda OEM.

- just recently adjusted the hand-brake (yes at the rotor) and it is still
pretty poor.
- Recently lubed sliders and changed fliud - just pads to do next.

Brake Pads - any thoughts?

I took a tip that Ray gave me for track days and bought a set of
Metal King pads which he had used and liked before going over to RX7
disc's and calipers on YP, so i slip them in along with colder plugs,
then when i get home i put the OEM pads back in and the stock plugs,
and at Pukekohe last year and the year before no fade whatsoever in
about 30 or so laps, they seem to be the same as the Hawks a few K's
to warm them up which Ray warned me about, well worth the small
amount of time to change and adjust (rears) them,

I was running the EBC Green pads at Taupo and I got consistent results
throughout the day. I couldn't blame the final event on the brakes.

By the way has anyone had any experience with MINTEX brake pad material?
