Another one bites the dust
Hey Clive, are you there?
I'm interested to know what your insurance company decided to do with your
car, was it repairable, or did they write it off? The reason I ask is that
(embarrased) I have to admit to having done much the same to mine today! Wet
road, 100km, gentle uphill curve, rear came out and it was all over - right
rear suspension smashed, right rear corner stove in, front right wheel
smashed and suspension bent, front bumper riped away on that side too. I
rotated to be sliding uphill backwards, slammed into the bank on my side of
the road, then catapulted across the road into the barrie on the other side.
That barrier prevent a fall into the sea, or near to it, below. If you're
reading Colin it was on Pukerua Bay hill!Considering it was on a "black
spot" just out of Wellington, I am lucky to be telling the tale! I'm OK, but
damn!!!

Ouch!
Sounds like you were lucky to walk away from that one. You shouldn't have
any trouble with the insurance company though; just a normal crash (if
'normal' is the right word). I appreciated how you feel though. It's very
traumatic to see your baby all smashed up. I've had to go and see mine a
couple of times just to make sure it's alright.
My car is repairable and that is what is happening right now. Although it
looked a mess there was no rail damage and the bonnet and headlight were not
touched. The left front fender and door are being replaced but the rear
fender will be beaten back into shape. On of the engine mounts broke and
that is what put the engine on a lean. The water pump/ engine connection
will also have to be replaced (coming from Aus). About $7000 damage I
think. Good thing it was a soft bank I hit, not one of those concrete
barriers!
BTW I am looking for a cheap hardtop (I hope that isn't an oxymoron). Any
colour will do as I will re-paint it white. Doesn't have to have a heated
rear window or anything fancy.
Regards,
Clive.

Gary,
Sorry to hear about the car. Glad to here you're ok.
I assume you were on your own? Linley not in the car?
I'm sure your insurance will pay out... but they may decide to write
the car off rather than fix it. Clives is newer and worth about
$15-$20k, so they're happy to pay the $6-$7k repairs. If yours is
older and only worth $10k like mine, they'd probably balk at those
repair costs... If they do write it off, they should let you salvage
any after-market stuff, like voodoo knobs or link computers... so you
can install them in your new car (Or sell them to me! - yep, I'm a
heartless bastard and I'm getting first in the queue if thats what you
want to do .
Anyway, Glad to hear you're OK.
Bummer,
Fletch.

Clive,
OK, repairable eh... I'm going to look closely at mine this morning. From
what I saw I have - smashed right rear suspension, the hub carrier just
ripped away... rear right fender and light cluster completely pulverised,
rear bumper crushed on the right, Borla Exhaust pipe as far as I looked
crushed and mangled, front right wheel totalled, and tie rod ripped away,
front bumber shredded on the right. Surprisingly the right front guard
seemed untouched, and the bonnet also I think. I will pop the bonnet this
morning and see what it looks like inside, but I suspect OK. The only
concern is that the drivers door required a little bit of a push to get to
open, I don't know if that will mean the chassis is twisted at all. I can't
believe I am uninjured... as it was happening, and I saw the impact coming
I was thinking... how should I hold my head to avoid it hitting anything in
the car?... kerboom... then, hey I'm still conscious! but at this point it
was skating across the road and narrowly missed an oncoming car, that was my
major piece of luck.
Wish my car well for me... I'd hate to see it go to the wreckers!

Thanks Fletch,
Nope I was on my own, coming back from a meeting, and not actually pushing
that hard.
Mine is a 91, and from what I can see at market value is worth about 12k.
We'll see what they say, if they write it off I'll be looking to take what I
can of the good stuff off the car, and then buy at least the engine. You
don't really think I wouldn't want to rebuild another the same do you
!!!

So awfully sorry to hear about the accident and demise of your car Gary, but
most thankful to hear that you aren't hurt. Wishing you all the best for
getting your car back on the road

Gary,
It sounds like you have done more damage than my car. You were very lucky to
come out OK. Any crash you walk away from has got to be a good crash I
think, even though you feel pretty angry with yourself for letting it get
out of hand.
Good luck with repairs...
Clive.

Thanks Clive, and all who wished me well. I'm not angry at myself, just
thankful I walked away. I think the car will live again.
