yup - $200 for no front plate mounted to the car. He didn't like the nice
cover over the rear plate either - but the same cop (well traffic security
guard really) had given us a couple of warnings earlier.

He lives nearby and it was a bit of a personal crusade for him I think. Not
upset - just venting - he was just doing his job... :)

cheers

Howard,

I noticed that cover you had over the rear plate. What exactly is it... does
it fool the camera???

no - just lightly tinted perspex - designed to increase the coolometer :)
I'll probably replace it with clear now though, or leave it off altogether.

Just got a copy of some parts of the NZ Transport Act 1962 - will post
findings once I know more. I thought I might write a nice letter.

There is an arguable position on no front plate, or at least on a
non-standard front plate. Colin, who I drove up to Taupo with, has the info.
His partner is a lawyer.

He has been reluctant to widely disseminate the info though, as he thinks it
is likely to result in a change to that applicable law. So far down here, we
don't get hassled about the stick on plates...

Transport act is pretty clear on non-standard plates. Can't have'em -
Section 15 Para a) & d)

Is Colin on email? (off list)

Yes he is, but I'll ask him the question initially... I'll get back to you.

A cautionary word from the south - don't be fooled into thinking that South
Island enforcement officers are all polite and turn a blind eye to non
standard plates. I got pinged over a year ago now by a character in a mufti
whom I thought was being nice and polite in moving over to let me on through
one very wet rainy day. He followed closely for a while and then flashed me
with his behind the grill lights. I pulled over to let him on past.
Imagine my concern when he pulled up in front, placed his cap firmly on his
head and proceeded to go over my car with a fine tooth comb. He finally
declared that I could contribute to the Government coffers to the tune of
$200 because of my non standard front stick on plate. I politely pointed
out that the plate was exactly the same dimensions, colour, font and
reflectorised as the "real" one - all to no avail.

I was informed that not only did the originals have to be fitted but they
had to be in a plane vertical to the road surface and square on to the front
of the car - he knew his stuff..

I thanked him politely for his fine attention to detail and his efforts to
clearly rid the road of such lurking hazards and evils as stick on plates.

Later that day I decided to present myself to the Central Police Station
guilt ridden citizen that I was - original plate properly affixed (vertical
to the road and square to the front of my car) ticket in hand. I was repaid
with "good citizen handshake" and asked to leave my ticket left in their
capable hands!!!

The moral - all you other law breakers out there repent - replace your non
standard plates now - redemption may still be possible ...

Cheers

This obviously depends on the temperament of the particular occifer... and
whether he likes cars or not.

We have been stopped once, my wife was coming back from the city. The
officer involved expressed concern that the plate that had been replaced by
the stick on one might be running around on another car... his advice...
carry the one you have replaced with you in the boot. No further hassles in
about 3 years anywhere in the North Island and upper South.
