Wheel Alignment

Post by peter » Thu Nov 02, 2000 5:53 pm

!
Scored a good deal on a full wheel alignment - $40 at Beaurepaires, 642 Rosebank Road, Avondale. It took about 30
minutes, and included a briefing on what each wheel had been doing (toe, camber etc).
Ask for Mat, or phone him on (09) 828 - 4627.
He'd appreciate this info being placed on the website, tell him you're a club member to get the special price. (Normally
$65/$55).

Wheel Alignment

Post by Gary Morrison » Thu Nov 02, 2000 6:18 pm

Just out of interest... wheel alignments require quite some knowledge and
experience in the operator. A lot of tyre shops put a junior guy on it which
isn't best value for money. My guy here in Wellington would take close to an
hour at it, and had a wealth of experience (used to do some of the Oz V8s
when they were here for the Street races we used to have). Value for money
isn't necessarily the lowest price, its a job done in the hands of someone
with experience.

You should as a matter of course get a print out of both before and after
numbers, and you should be able to have them align to your own specs should
you want to.

thanks Gary, interesting point about the printout, I may go back and see if that info can be retrieved. Mat was very
informative about the changes he had made to my setup, I noticed a vast improvement in handling at Taupo.

Got lots of appreciative comments in Taupo about the knobs - thanks Gary!

What's a wheel alignment cost you? ( if you don't mind me asking).

I agree with Gary finding someone to take time out to get it right is very useful,
and you should always get a print out before and after, i always use Wirau wheel
alignment in Glenfield and they take over an hour to do mine, mainly because
i use settings outside of the manufacturers (only on the front) and i insist
on both sides being very very close to the same, i always talk to Merv and we
discuss what i want, he is most helpful, cost is around $67, first i always
set my tyre pressures to 35lb, empty the car out including the spare and have
a minimum of half a tank of fuel, i know there are a few good alignment places
in Auckland, perhaps we should set up a list on our website for the members,
what do you think Howard ?

Ray :-)

How about someone writes a short article about alignment?
with possibly
- a few paragraphs describing what alignment does and what each setting
changes
- some suggested alignment settings to start with
- some web links to other peoples alignment settings or articles
- some alignment specialists in NZ that clubmembers have tried
- some diagrams?

I'll put it in the maintenance section on the site. Volunteers?

Wheel Alignment

The last wheel alignment I had, which was on my big car, but cost would be
the same for the MX-5, was $65. The place I go to down here is Autolign,
they specialise only in suspension and alignment, but the operator is the
key to it... 10 years experience. On the MX-5 he says you cannot get the
best alignment without weighting the drivers position too.

I've wrote two wheel alignment reviews for the web site ages ago.
See http://www.mx5club.co.nz/info/reviews.sht

Not all places are the same. One of these was great and one was terrible.

PS we need more reviews from you guys. Remember you can review anything and
it will almost certainly be useful to someone else.

Could anyone please tell me of a good place down here in Christchurch to get
that done. The handling of my car hasn't been the same since new tyres were
put on it 6 months ago & I think that could have a fair bit to do with it.

Also what should I expect to pay to get my front brakes fixed?

Many thanks
Tj

Tj, phone Autotek-telephone chch 372 9595 and ask for Peter, tell him I sent
you there and ask where they get their racing cars wheel alignment done.
These guys build Transam race cars for Ruapuna raceway and are very
approachable-will help anyone and are more than reasonable for mechanical
repairs. They would no doubt be able to answer your second question as well.
regards trevor henderson.

Thank you guys for your suggestions re: wheel alignment down here in
Christchurch. I will check out both of those places when I've had my brakes
fixed :)
