Go Fast

Post by Clive Granger » Wed Oct 25, 2000 8:17 pm

I am looking to install some go-fast hardware into my '94 MX-5. Would I be
opening up a can of worms if I asked people's opinion of supercharger and
turbos? I was thinking the JR supercharger currently around $7500 is
just too dear. What are the options in a turbo? Running around 8psi say.
Trust or Greddy (or what)? How much should I be paying for a turbo and what
should I be looking out for.

Even though I am only thinking about 7-8psi, I am thinking about
intercooling it as well.

Also what do people think about the Link computer. I have heard some
damning criticism of them just recently from a performance mechanic. He
swears by the Haltech but that is around $2500.

I thought it was just; come up with the readies, bolt the stuff on and go!
No such luck.

Confused,
Clive.

Re: Supercharger/Turbo: (in this order)
1. Talk to others who have forced induction i.e. Ray, Lou etc
2. Subs cribe to the miatapower.com and SSCOR US lists - read the archives
first (when they work - most of it has been asked before) Find out about
the merits/drawbacks of each kit/brand.
3. Talk to Rotary Power and other import turbo installers about price in NZ
or price a kit from the US and install it yourself.
4. Empty your bank account.

Re Link:
I'd buy one if I had any money - I think price/performance they are great -
even for n/a use (They are an expensive gadget though - but I like gadgets).
The firmware is getting better and better for the MX5 - but you should
probably buy it from Flyinmiata if you want to get access to this firmware.

Re: Haltech - why wouldn't the performance mechanic swear by it at $2.5K!

Note - If you are thinking about intercooling - that suggests to me you'll
want more power in the future. This suggests Turbo, and you'll end up
spending a lot more in the long run if you don't buy an all out - everything
included kit with turbo, ecu, intercooler, hoses etc etc. I bet you will
spend more than $7500 with any of these options however!
