How Much?

Post by VIKING RACING » Wed Oct 11, 2000 8:28 pm

Hi
Its me again, this time I need help with how much I should pay for a MX5
I know it is difficult to put a value on a car you have not seen but maybe you
could help me with a indicative price.
The car is a Eunos roadster 1989 White manual done 112k, 5owners, cambelt
done. I used "Checking out a Used Miata"
By Skip Cannon from the American Miata Club and everything seemed ok, except
the clutch pedal felt a little funny, but no slipping.
Asking price is $8500,00 but neg.
So if someone have an idea what the market price should be for a private sale
please let me know

John,

Sounds like a reasonable price, especially if you want white (they're not
that common). If the sellers say they are negotiable then you may even get
it for $8000 or less.

PS
In my opinion, MX5 prices are starting to creep up again for summer.

Cheers

Check for worn crank keyway - there are faqs at miata.net and Fletcher B has
posted to the US miatalist a few times on how to verify this problem by
removing plugs and checking piston heights for top dead centre as shown on
the timing marks. This may be a problem on an 89.

8.5k is good, but I have seen dealer cars that low. Offer 7 cash then
negotiate to between 7.5-8k

Earlier US models had problems with the white paint peeling and falling off
in places - I assume Japan models are the same. check this - it may have
been repainted.

Any maintenance records? If there is a regular and good history, the car is
more valuable. No history? Pay less.

I'm not sure what you mean by funny clutch, but if the pedal engages low -
you may just need to bleed the clutch. How do I know? I was shown how in
the weekend as my pedal was going to the floor without engaging. There was
a slight leak in the slave cylinder, but bleeding it apparently makes it
better for a few months. Seems to be fine so far - and cheaper than
re-building or replacing the cylinder. (Thanks Fletch!) I'm told this is
being done routinely on a couple of earlier models (6 months or so).

Don't forget to check out prices at
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/forsale/usedmx5/
- I notice there is a 1990 (red I think) for sale - $7.5K with a few
options, but white _is_ a rarer colour.

Cheers
