Insurance cost!

Post by VIKING RACING » Sun Oct 08, 2000 10:58 am

Hi everyone.
During my hunt for a MX-5 i checked on the insurance cost for the car. $450,00
to insure it, with demand to install a $1000,00 dollar alarm, it is a little
expensive for a car car i will only use during weekends&holidays. So is there
anyone who know about any ins.company there i can get a insurance that will
suit my usage of the car, I live in South Aucland

Insurance cost!

Well hopefully this inquiry results in another informal customer survey. My
1990 is insured with AA Insurance (RoadCover plus comprehensive policy) for
$10200. The annual premium is $268 ($300 excess). They did demand that a car
alarm be fitted because it was a convertible but the choice was mine into
make and type. I then qualified for the anti-theft discount as well!

Hi guys,
Just a quick word of warning - I too am insured with AA. They told me I
would qualify for a discount if my car had an alarm. I got a top of the line
alarm for a good price & installed it myself. (It is not that difficult to do
if you have a little bit of electrical knowledge).

Once fitted, I spoke to AA who said that I did not qualify for the alarm
discount as the alarm had not been installed by a professional installer (I
install electronic alarms & CCTV for a living). The only way to get the
discount is to get the vehicle certified by a "mechanic". I queried the term
mechanic and the woman from AA repeated it 3 times for me. My local garage
mechanic could certify the alarm as fitted correctly, but I could not certify
my own work!
Just a word of warning - get the whole story from your insurance agent!

My MX5 is insured for $11,000 at less than $200 ($250 excess, no drivers
under 25) with SIMU. I have all my other insurance with SIMU too. Insuring
for Nelson may be cheaper than for Sth Auckland?

Greetings, my MX5 is insured for similar value and cost as John's with AMI. I
have a $250 excess, but for the soft-top, the excess is $500 ( malicious
damage). This seems to be a typical situation in CHCH and no I did not need to
put in a burglar alarm- although I do have a flashing LED unit attached to the
armrest console panel- the LED is torch battery operated and cost about $20.
Whether its a deterent who knows but its a very small cost if it keeps people
away!

I meant to say AMI too! No mention of softtop different excess. A friend
here got her MX5's plastic rear window replaced (after being slashed) under
the 1 free glass claim per year rule that many companies have.

As I'm sure we all know a lot of factors affect insurance costs (including
how long you have lived and have been licensed in NZ). Compared others my
auto insurance costs here in Parnell appears to be very expensive. Anyone
insured (coverage with comprehensive) with any of the major carriers (NZI,
State, etc)?

just to make you all feel better. In the UK last year I was paying $1200 for
insurance for a 10yr old MX5. I had a full 60% no claims bonus, drivers were
limited to named drivers only (myself and my partner), I had a 6000 mile
annual mileage restriction and a $750 excess. I also thought I was getting a
pretty reasonable deal (how sad is that).

i'm starting to rethink my insurance. i'm insured with state. i'm a 25yr
female and my mx5 is insured for $9,600. i pay monthly and it costs me $529
per year with an excess of $750 which i'm told is that high because of the
type of car and the fact that although i'm over 25, i'm still in a high risk
category. my car is alarmed and my mother's isn't , yet she has an excess of
$300. go figure. i live in central auckland, so that may be part of the
reason for high costs.

Our 90 is insured for $12,000 with Sun Direct, Auckland location, $300 excess (named drivers) additional $300 excess for any other drivers. Cost $450, no requirement for an alarm. I shopped around for this a few years ago as NZI and AA were both dearer or higher excess and required an alarm fitted - as the MX5 only does a few thousand km a year and spends most of the time in our locked garage or in my work carpark in front of the office I could not justify an alarm - even though I do believe in them and have them fited to my and my wifes everyday vehicles

Sorry Howard you only "place".

12K coverage on 91 in Parnell, have an Alarm, 200 plus 400 excess (NZ
license less than 2 yrs), with a fender bender 1+ yrs ago.
--------------------$1454 with NZI.

I am truly amazed at the variance shared . Is there any way the club could
link up with someone to obtain a discounted rate that reflects some
consistency and logic (the latter something that doesn't appear on the
surface to exist)
