Shocks

Post by humed » Fri Aug 25, 2000 4:54 pm

I need to replace my shocks as two of them have began to leak. I have read
a lot varying points of view as to which are the best shocks for the MX5 on
the web, which seem to fall into two camps - Koni vs KYB. Has anybody had
any experience with these shocks, and what about brands available like
Monroe or Bilstein, anyone had any experience with these?

Any comments greatly appreciated

Dave

Just recenttly bought Koni adjustables for my 94. Set them on the middle
perch but need to raise them on to the highest position at the front as it
sits too low with the springs I use.

They have a very noticeable improvement in response than the stock shocks
(or my ones anyway) and once I get the alignment adjusted shortly, I'll be
able to give a better review.

Very comfortable ride on the softest setting even with a low car, better
than the Bilsteins I tried in another MX5, and I have yet to try it set at a
firmer setting.

Approx $8-900 (excl fitting) from Koni agents George Stocks & co.
Not the cheapest, but lifetime warranty on defects, and lots of good reviews
from the US.

Dave
...you cant go wrong with Koni shocks they will out last
your car as would Bilsteins, I know a few people that have had bad
experiences with KYB and Monroe shocks, but i'm sure some people like
them, i have used Koni's for over 30 yrs on all sorts of performance
cars and never had any problems, I had Bilsteins fitted to my yellow MX5
when i bought the car 4 yrs ago and the car handled exceptionally well,
and i have just changed them for Koni's, only because i wanted the
adjustable damping which Bilsteins don't have, a tip with Koni's, set
the spring perch on the lowest setting with standard springs and the top
perch for lowered springs, at least with Koni's you have a choice to set
them to your liking
