Towbar for Cycle Carrier
I have a couple of bikes that I would like to transport on my MX5.
I already have a double cycle carrier to fit on a towbar, but I do not have
the Towbar.
Can anyone help with a reasonably priced Towbar or tell where the best place
would be to buy a Towbar that will not cost a small fortune.
Look forward to any suggestions, Arnold.

Hi Arnold,
While it's not the cheapest solution, to carry my bikes I bought a towbar
that has a 4-wheel drive on the front of it, and I keep the MX5 for fun.
Regards, Graham.

I know a number of US vendors stock receiver hitches especially for bikes -
you could try looking through the list of online vendors at
http://www.miata.net/marketplace.html Might be nicer than having to put a
towbar on - but you'll have to worry about freight etc.
Or there is an innovative DIY solution using the rear tow hooks at
http://realbig.com/miata/1999-03/3719.html
Can't offer advice on NZ towbar installers though - sorry.

Thanks Graham, can't afford a 4wd like some can. Just wanted to extend the
fun that we get from our MX5. Perhaps we could use your 4wd for the bikes?

Arnold,
The club magazine had an article in Autumn 1998 about a member who fitted a
towbar to his MX5. Might be worth reading that.
It's on the club web site under 'magazines'

I wrote the article - Tow Bar was from Best Bars - it was a prototype but they presumably have the pattern, I still have it and am in Auckland if you want to have a look at it.

Bike Carrier
Look, don't spoil your baby with a tow ball to carry bikes - tut tut !
Have a look at the Moss Miata accessories on line at www.miatamania.com
They offer a universal, removable 2x bike carrier for US$76.25 - looks pretty
good in the pics.
If you insist they also have a "trailer hitch" (spew) to go for US$199
You can order the catalogue on line, as I did, and it arrived within a week.
Hours of Christmas and birthday present ordering guaranteed.
Cheers

Towbar for Cycle Carrier
Hi,
I can recommend Best Bars product, not from MX5 experience, but I have one
of their towbars on my Nissan Bluebird and it seems to be good quality. In
comparison to previous tow bars I have had fitted to other cars, the quality
is streets ahead. Their bars are also safety standards certified.
As to bicycle carriers, there are a couple of carriers with high density
foam feet that rest on the boot lid and bumper with straps that connect to
the top and bottom of the boot lid to hold the carrier in place. It may be
that an MX5 is too small to take one of these but it's worth going and
talking to someone in a cycle shop about it.
Regards,
Lindsay
